My 13 year old persian has hip dysplasia in both hips. I read stories about the surgery to treat this and it just seems cruel to put a 13 year old cat through this.

She is currently being treated with "off label" with Metacam, a drug for dogs that is not recommended for cats (my vet is being very conservative with the dosing). This does seem to help her a lot, yet her legs still are giving out on her from time to time.

Has anyone else been through this and have guidance?

Sorry about your kitty having problems.  Thank God I've never had to deal with this in cats or dogs.  Usually the larger breeds with long bodies (Maine Coons/Ragdolls, etc.) have more problems with HD then other breeds.  First I've heard that its occuring in Persians now.

You'll know what to do when you feel her quality of life is not beneficial to her anymore.
