I answered hisses and puffs up, but what Tripod does actually depends on the dog. I've seen her check out a small dog, about her size, and the dog checked her out, that was it. Larger dogs, it depends on the dog. When my youngest sister brings her large Mexican Hairless, she says he thinks cats are boring; Tripod hisses and hides from him.

When my nephew brings his Italian Greyhound over, the dog checks her out from a distance, and Tripod hisses yet keeps an eye on him, or hides. If she doesn't hide, she guards her territory. One of these days, a dog is gonna get swatted. She may be 17 years old, but she can still be a little spitfire when she wants to be!

Some cats are more special than others.

We have four cats and one golden retriever.  They all get along GREAT, like one happy family.  When we got the dog I already had 3 cats.  We never had any problems.  The dog loved playing with one of my cats in particular.  The cats never once hissed or ran from the dog.  My cats all rub themselves against the dog all the time.  In the evenings we all hang out together in the den watching TV.  I think the dog thinks she's just another cat.  The cats seem to treat her like one anyway.  I doubt all dogs would behave this way with cats.  Golden retrievers are well known to be sweet and gentle, which is why I agreed to get this dog.  I wouldn't have considered any other breed.  I'm definitely not a dog person, but we -me and the cats- tolerate her fine.

Depending on your cat's temperament it might work,  but Star is very headstrong and acts like my hubby and I are HER pets so a dog was not a good idea.

We had a black lb mix for a week and she beat the poor dog silly. My cats hated the dog. The dog chewed up all their toys in under an hour.

These are just my experiences..

I can't answer the poll, because the right choice isn't there!

My "Vonnie" - a flame-point Siamese - has always been more comfortable around dogs, than other cats.

Should a new dog appear, she's right there, wanting to greet it. In no time at all, she has that dog following HER lead, taking HER orders!

For example, I had a guest come over once. This person, unexpectedly, turned up with a 4 month old Yellow Lab. Pretty good sized dog! Well, in a heart beat, she had the dog chase her .... she darted behind the sofa ... he was scrabbling to get behind the couch, when she came out the other end, walked over to his side, and asked him what he was doing.
"I'm going to get a cat" said he.
"You don't say?" said the cat.
"That's right ...HEY!!!" ... and the chase was on again.

In no time at all, they were the best of friends.

She'll greet nearly any dog, without hesitation.

Perhaps, most surprising, she loves watching dogs on TV. Once she sat in front of the TV for a half-hour, watching a program about the wild dogs of Africa.

That said, she does play well with my other cat, Motzie. And, when a feral cat once fought Motzie, Vonnie came running to help her friend! (BTW, that feral, and Motzie, became best friends after that tussle).

my cats dont do any of that
they think the dog is one of them
they always play with her
and shes a rottweiler puppy
so shes a pretty big dog already
she gets along fantastically with the kittens tooo

Sometimes I think my cat's are more independent then I am, and then I realize they are the ones who make sure I get up every morning and remember to feed them.

When we had Harry, the other cats didn't really mind him. Everyone except Mindy. She would puff up and lunge at the screen door whenever he went past

Mindy isn't a good example for an average cat, though. She's a bit off her rocker.
