| My cat recently gave birth to two kittens, extremely far apart. The first one was born on Saturday morning and the second one wasn't born until around 9 pm that night. The first one accidentally got trapped by itself in a closet (because we didn't know she had given birth in there) while we were gone on Saturday. We gave it to the mother and laid it on her nipples, but it seemed unable to nurse and died yesterday. The second one seems to be doing fine. My question, however, is that I am not sure she has birthed all the kittens. I feel at least one hard lump under one of her nipples that seems about the size of a kitten, but I am uncertain if this is it. Is there any way of telling (other than xray or vet?) and if she is still pregnant, what do I do? It's been almost 48 hours since the second birth and no more kittens have come out yet. I am afraid she is being stressed out by our 2 month old male (not fixed), who continues to nurse from her and nursed before she gave birth as well. We have tried seperating them because she sometimes bites his neck since she gave birth that looks like she's trying to kill him, but they act friendly other than that, so we let them hang out together when we are watching but keep them seperated for the times we can't. What do I do? I'm afraid if the kitten isn't born soon it could hurt her or die or both!!

| I think you need to call a vet - fast. Separate the 2 month old from the mother (8 week old male should be with his natural mother until 12 weeks). Your momcat is is distress. Usually a cat gives birth to all in 6 hours -- it can take up to 24 but NOT 48. Did mom cat deliver 2 placenta's? Maybe the lump you feel is a placenta. Maybe it is a dead kitten, whatever it is, your momcat needs to see the vet. Put her in a box lined with clean towels and her kitten (not the 8 week old male) and take her to the vet ASAP. If your momcat survives all of this and after her kitten is weaned (12 weeks) please get her spayed. Get the male kitten neutered.

| Most likely its just a placenta. Lots of our pets only had 2 babies when it was their first litter. Unless she seems in pain, and makes groaning noises, or is bleeding out of control, everythng should be fine. About spaying her: 1. Your cat likes having babies, you'd be doing her a favor by not spaying her, unless she had health problems or was really old. 2. spayed cats are usually fat and listless, which is not healthy, and causes health problem. 3. most cats who're spayed after having kittens go crazy. The get really wierd acting, I've experienced problems with crazy hormone confusion. 4. If you like having kittens, and its not seriously endangering your cat's life, DO NOT let anyone tell you that you have to spay her. Some people have problems with cats having kittens and being independent of people. --Hope everything goes well!

I'm sorry, but none of that is true. 1. Cats do not necessarily LIKE having kittens, they do it because of biological imperatives (instinct). It wouldn't make any difference if they "liked" it or not, they would still do it. I've known cats that have killed their kittens, but that didn't stop them from getting pregnant in the first place. It's purely instinct. 2. Spaying does not make cats fat. Trust me---I'm not "spayed", and I'm still overweight. Female hormones do not burn calories. You might be able to make an argument about neutered males getting fat, because testosterone DOES burn calories, but female hormones do not. Being overfed, underexercised, and bored makes cats fat. My mom's indoor-outdoor spayed female is actually quite thin. 3. I've never met a female that went crazy after being spayed. Even if she's had kittens. One of mine had 3 litters before being spayed (it is incredibly inhumane to allow a cat to have more than 3-4 litters in her life, anyway) and she's the most laid-back cat I have. And my mom's cat really calmed down after being spayed---she was very uptight before that. 4. Cats cannot exist independent of humans. They are domesticated. If you're feeding a cat, you've already messed with nature. If you truly believe that cats should not be neutered, you should at least not be misleading people with untruths.
