Comb the dogs and show her the fleas. She shouldn't have that many dogs anyway, and what she's doing is welfare fraud. And don't forget fleas carry a buttload of diseases. It was fleas that carried the Black Plague throughout Europe during the Middle Ages, killing millions. Bottom line, if she refuses to believe what you tell her, despite the demonstration, you can tell her you're going to report her to Child Protective Services as well as the Humane Society, and the agency she's recieving benefits from. Because as stated earlier, she's committing fraud, the fleas on her dogs are a health hazard to your family, not to mention the fact she has too many. Most zoning laws state you can only have about three dogs unless you are licensed as a kennel or breeder.

I know times are tough, I'm unemployed too, but you need to keep looking for a job. Even if you're doing yard work or janitorial work, you need a job. And you need to find a new place to live. See if you qualify for Section 8 vouchers for housing, if available in your area. Check www.hud.gov for information. Your family's health is at stake, your landlady is committing fraud and if she's that much into denial may have mental health issues. And that converted garage may be illegal. You deserve better.

RE: FLEAS and my landlord

Perhaps you could menace her. You need that home but she needs your money. If she throws you out you can denounce her and I'm sure you can prove you have been living there.

So both of you have something the other one needs. You are en the same level. And you must say her there are fleas, and you can prove it. So you need to find a solution.

Tell her you don't usually see fleas on a dog. They are difficult to see. Try brushing a dog. If it falls some black specks, those are the fleas poo. If you wet it, it becomes red. If there isn't fleas there isn't that specks. If the poo is there, then also the fleas.

RE: FLEAS and my landlord

The animals, yard and your guest house all need to be treated for fleas as soon as possible. I agree that in lieu of a month or two of rent, pay for the treatment of the dogs/cats.

RE: FLEAS and my landlord

How about offering to buy Advantage or Frontline for her pets in lieu of "rent"? especially if you show her the corpses of the fleas you pick off your kids, as proof that there's a flea problem.

Teatree oil, orange oil, euaclyptus, and lavender oil are all natural flea repellants. Teatree is posionouse to cats though, so i don't reccomend putting that on her kitty.

Of course the fleas aren't biting her, fleas prefer dogs and cats to people, but go after people when their preffered food source is no longer available.

Advantage is the best topical flea retardant available, but it is expensive. It's coming down in price, but not quite enough.

FLEAS and my landlord

Hello I need some help and advice, i live with my girlfriend, her 2 daughters, and our 3 month old baby inside a converted garage into a guesthouse. Her mother owns and lives inside the house itself as well as has my girlfriend's kids sleep in her bedroom which she allows the dogs to sleep in the bed with her. We pay her $200 a month to live there and she refuses to give us any rent receipts cuz she is on financial aid and doesn't wanna show any proof that she is getting extra $$ that could keep her from getting that aid. She has a total of 1 cat, and 11 dogs which live inside and out of the house. She keeps a lot of them inside the house and i know they are infested with fleas as well as keeping a few outside at times, the problem is the kids,my girlfriend and even our baby are showing flea bites. I have even found fleas in all 3 girls hair and tried removing what i could. She refuses to admit her dogs have fleas, saying" my dogs don't have fleas cuz they don't itch and i never feel them biting me so there aren't any fleas on them". What can we have done to get her to fix her animals flea problems, because we can't afford to move out on our own with myself currently unemployed. We don't blame the pets we love them to death but the flea problem has spread to our guesthouse from her house and is infesting our kids what should we do?
