First Ragdolls are long hair cats - always. Snowshoes are short hair cats - always. Snows are rare, as the color pattern is hard to achieve in them. And they are only accepted in Blue or Seal points. I've seen a lot of pointed and white mixed breed cats that sorta look like a Snowshoe, but are nothing more then a pointed and white.

Thank you for your replies. I have been trying to post a photo of Rocky and Probie, but all my photo sizes are too large for uploading. Have got to explore how to make a file smaller, and will then post photos.

Perhaps so - but not necessarily. We're sure our Harley is a Ragdoll, but since he's a shelter baby, we will never know for a fact. Could be that a previous owner didn't really know cat breeds and didn't know what they had.

I think if you had either breed you'd know it from the registration papers or if not papers by word of mouth if the original owner had purchased a pedigreed cat from a breeder.

Description

The Snowshoe began as a cross between the American Shorthair and the Siamese in the early 1960s in the United States, producing a sturdy, pointed cat with white markings on the face, chest and feet. It is found in the usual Siamese colors, most commonly seal, chocolate, lilac, and blue in two patterns, mitted and bicolor. It is also found in red (flame), cream, cinnamon, and fawn. American Shorthairs, Oriental Shorthairs, and Siamese are still legal outcrosses.

The Snowshoe is a lively breed that enjoys indoor living. It is affectionate and playful, yet laid back -- combining some of the best personality traits of its parent breeds.

The Snowshoe is still a rare breed.

Associations: The Snowshoe is accepted by AACE, ACFA, CFF, and TICA.

Description

The Ragdoll is best known for its docile and placid temperament. It is perhaps the gentlest and most easy-going of breeds. The name "Ragdoll" derived from the fact that many of these cats go completely limp when picked up.

The breed had its origin in California in the 1960s with a cat named Josephine. Several wild and scientifically impossible stories were put out by the colorful breed founder regarding the origin and development of the Ragdoll breed, including extraterrestrials, kittens' traits and personality being affected by the mother's being hit by a car, and genetic alteration using human genes. None of these legends are scientifically supportable.

What is known is that this breed has been selectively bred over many years for desirable traits, such as large size, docility, and ability to go limp in the arms like a rag doll -- hence the cat's name. Persians, Birmans, Burmese, and domestics had roles in early breeding programs.

The Ragdoll is a large, semi-longhaired cat, exhibiting the pointed (Siamese) pattern in three varieties: colorpoint, bicolor, and mitted. They are available in seal, blue, chocolate, and lilac point colors, either with or without markings on the face and feet. In some associations, they are also available in nonstandard colors, such as red and lynx point.

The Ragdoll is the largest fully domestic breed of cat. Adult males can weigh over 20 pounds in adulthood. Their long coats need minimal care.

Associations: The Ragdoll is accepted by most major cat registries.

Can you post a picture of each cat? Hard to tell from a description, much easier if we can see them.

Can anyone tell me, please, how I can tell if I have a Ragdoll or if I have a Snowshoe?? I have two males with intelligent, talkative and very loveable personalities. One follows me room-to-room more so than the other, but we're his third set of parents and he needs constant reassurance.

Both have white paws and underbellies, but Rocky has a 'bandit' face with the inverted V. Probie is younger by two years and still darkening up on his body, but his face has no white except for his lower lip. He also has the white paws and underbelly.

I've looked up many websites to get descriptions of each breed, and they both say pretty much the same thing about each other.

I appreciate all comments.
