I recently purchased a male Ragdoll kitten from what I understood to be a reputable breeder out of state. I placed a deposit on the kitten and received an email approximately 5 weeks later from the breeder advising the "kitten was ready to go". We made the 7 hour trip to pick him up. Breeder advised the kitten was "vet checked" and healthy and 9 1/2 week old. While she gave us a tour of her cattery and saw all kinds of kittens, we never saw any of his litter mates, and it never occured to me to ask. Kitten had upper respiratory infection, severe diarrhea, and was found to weight 15 oz at vet check on Monday morning. I contacted the breeder and was advised that any medical bills were my responsibility, "kitten was healthy when he left...". I specifically asked if he was the "runt" of the litter as my vet said he looked to be about 6 weeks old. Breeder's response was "No", and if I wasn't happy, I could return him. To me, this would mean his litter mates weight less than 15 ounces at 9 1/2 weeks old ?? Again, I had no frame of reference. I've never purchased a kitten and didn't realize this baby was less than 1/2 of normal weight for his age. I trusted the "reputable" breeder. I never received notification from her that this kitten was the "runt" during the 6 weeks that I waited for him to be "ready". Instead, she waited until we made the trip, got home and had him vet checked. Then the only option she offered was for us to "bring the kitten back" and said we didnt have to take him if WE thought he was too small. I would think a good breeder would have notified me before we made the drive, given me the option of refusing this kitten, choosing another one, discounted the price or offered my deposit back to me. My question: are these the actions of a "reputable" breeder ? I would really appreciate your opinions on this as I am brand new to the kitten world.

Thanks so much.

Siamese Breed

I was wondering why is it that a lot of Siamese cats seem to be cross-eyed?

Breeders and Catteries

I have been going out on the web and visiting cattery pages and I have two questions that seem harmless enough.

1. What exactly does it mean when someone says we ship? Does this mean they personally deliver?

2. Is it a common practise to sell a retired queen/stud? My thoughts on this is why wouldn't you keep and cherish the cat that was used for your profit. My cats will be 3 in February and I've had them since they were about 7 weeks old. I have had cats and dogs all my life growing up as a kid. I always thought these cats were unusual and so do other people when they see them. I always wondered why as a kitten my cats would just completely relax when you pick them up (I thought they were just spoiled) I always wondered why they hair felt different from other cats (like a rabbit) I always wonder why they always lay on their backs why they were so bushy and their tails fan out and they always stand on their hind legs. People thought they were exotic because they are not fat just big. Then one day I was watching animal planet and the breed Ragdoll cats was displayed. My cats have all the characteristics of a Ragdolls except they don't have blue eyes and they are darker than Ragdolls but the they have the same shape and behavior. Pepper has the white face, pink, nose, white feet and belly. The rest is black/chocolate brown. Stripes is grey, cream, and orange with black stripes his feet are mitted. Is it safe to say they are Ragdolls?

cat breeds.

i received this very beautiful cat as a gift. i have been very curious about cats, mine in particular since i have never seen a cat of its distinction. i was wondering if there was any possible way to determine my cats breed.

this is when she was a baby i dont know if this picture will help.

What breed am I?

Hi there,

We adopted a kitten recently and we wanted to see if anyone knew what breed he was? I never really gave much though to what breed he is until now, I know he's not a pure breed but Im curious to hear others opinions.

He's completely grey, and his fur is thick but short. Eyes are yellow most of the time, he's bigger than the average cat, with a stocky build.

personality wise he is lazy, quiet (unless its dinner time) and keeps to himself though is still affectionate. he likes to be petted and scratched, but not held. He doesn't like sitting on peoples laps, but likes being near you. For example if you leave a room he will follow you, and make himself comfortable a few metres away.

he's cautiously friendly to strangers. He is not aggressive but will half-heartedly swipe at you if you annoy him and nips my feet sometimes for fun.

My vet thinks he could be British short hair, but he's face isn't as flat as those guys. anyway I've uploaded some photos for people to assess. Well weeks went by and I caught a video of her and her kittens. There are 5 total and each one is a different color which is interesting. I have a cat that isn't nuetured and she used to follow him everywhere he went... maybe the little orange kitty is his haha
So my question is since she's a stray and we have so many wild animals around here where we live (Whish is how my other cat was killed), what should I do? The kittens are always trying to get into the house by the way. Is it the right thing to welcome them in?
***Note that I feed their mama everyday and she's been coming over for food for a few months.

So here's the video Id like to share with you
http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=38658272

Abother question about the kitties

Ok so this is another question about the stray kittens.
I was at a friends house when my mom texted me saying that all the cats including mine, slept in my room all night. (I have a sliding door to the porch that my litle brother left open). They still want to be in my room but they're to scared cuz Im in there... So now the sleep out in the cold in a box with a blanket inside that I left outside my door for them.
The next day, I was able to catch one (the white one -- if you've seen the video in my last topic). but I didnt really know what to do with her when I got her inside. There was a scared kitty inside with an angry mom outside with 4 other kittens that run when they see you... whats the best way to catch all these lil' guys? My friend suggested getting a crate and when I see them eating the food (since they're already weaned thankfully) I pull a straing to shut the door.... does that sound ok?

Can someone help with breed of cat?

I've had my kittie since February of this year. I was originally looking for a Persian, and found an ad in the local paper. When I arrived, I noticed that the male I was originally interested in was white with orange points, short haired, and looked nothing at all like a Persian. I saw the mother and noticed she didn't have the Persian nose/face, but then I saw the little girl kitten sitting in the corner. I fell in love with her and paid the price for a Persian anyways, unsure if she was or not.

Her breed doesn't make a difference in how much I love her, but I have been very curious!

She definitely has the body of a Persian, and a big, puffy tail. Her noise sort of flat, it doesn't have a "ski slope" and she has a very round face and eyes. Her coat is very soft, and she always seems to be smiling, although she makes it quite clear when she is mad!

I have attached a picture of her, if anyone can help me? I know she's probably considered a "domestic longhair", but I'm interested to see what her background could be.

Thank You all in advance!

Help! Pregnant Cat Questions!!

My cat recently gave birth to two kittens, extremely far apart. The first one was born on Saturday morning and the second one wasn't born until around 9 pm that night. The first one accidentally got trapped by itself in a closet (because we didn't know she had given birth in there) while we were gone on Saturday. We gave it to the mother and laid it on her nipples, but it seemed unable to nurse and died yesterday. The second one seems to be doing fine. My question, however, is that I am not sure she has birthed all the kittens. I feel at least one hard lump under one of her nipples that seems about the size of a kitten, but I am uncertain if this is it. Is there any way of telling (other than xray or vet?) and if she is still pregnant, what do I do? It's been almost 48 hours since the second birth and no more kittens have come out yet. I am afraid she is being stressed out by our 2 month old male (not fixed), who continues to nurse from her and nursed before she gave birth as well. We have tried seperating them because she sometimes bites his neck since she gave birth that looks like she's trying to kill him, but they act friendly other than that, so we let them hang out together when we are watching but keep them seperated for the times we can't. What do I do? I'm afraid if the kitten isn't born soon it could hurt her or die or both!!

La Fay

she is and i'm happy to what do have to say

When do queens stop protecting their kittens?

I have a momma cat (DSH with oriental features - maybe abyssinian (is that oriental?)) and 2 of her kittens, along with 7 other cats that live in the same part of the house. The kittens are about 4 months old and momma still supervises them all the time and hisses and swats at the other cats if they get too close to her or the kittens. Is there a point at which she will stop being so protective?

(obviously this is not a real recent pic)

About breeding in Illinois (laws)

Hi everyone. We are wanting to start breeding Persians and Himalayans. We have a breeder that is going to retire that is in Mo. and is willing to help us out with the in and outs of breeding. We live in Granite City , IL and have contacted City Hall and they are clueless about if we need a breeders permit or anything, There is a cap of 3 cats in a household and not sure if that is lifted if we are going to do a cattery or not. Any information anyone can give us would be greatly appreciated. Worst case if there is nothing we can do in Granite City, ILL. We have been talking about moving anyways is there in cities around this area that would allow us to do a cattery , Just nothing in the state of MO.

Thank You

Josh and Cathy

Sand Cat Breeder?

There has always been cats in my life, my mother is a veterinarian and now has 7 cats with which she lives. I will be moving out shortly (as i'm soaking up as much of the rent/morgage free living as i can while i'm in school) and will soon be looking for a cat of my own. I began searching for an exotic that interested me as i'm accustomed to domestics and want something a little more challenging. The sand cat is that choice, although, now i'm having troubles finding a breeder... and seeing as it's not even listed in the breed section on this page, i'm starting to believe that this breed isn't available for sale. If you are, or know a breeder for this type of cat, please contact me at - blood4honor@yahoo.com

thanks
-=ghost=-

Feral cat caregivers

I know I feel some responsibility toward these cats, so I do what I can for the ferals around my place- someone somewhere down the line broke the pact we made with all the animals we've domesticated, and left them to fend for themselves.

So I was wondering how many of the folks here also take care of a colony of ferals? It doesn't matter how much care you give them if you try and feed them and try to give them warm shelter in bad weather (that's more than they've been given by other humans).

Rescue Groups

I found a possibly feral persian or Himalayan on my porch this weekend, does anyone know of a rescue group that could take him if I can catch him? Its a pretty cat and i know that he shouldn't be outdoors. I can't take on another cat, and if he's a pet and allowed to wander like that then his family probably doesn't deserve him.

cat breeders looking to sale

FYI, When looking for the best way to sale your kittens it is hard because there is so much competition out there. So, I think going to sites that are fairly new sites eliminates the competition because you as the breeder will be one of the first to post your ad. Which will give you more exposure. One really nice site I saw was PetScouters.com, its free to post ads and you can ad your cat website links to their resource page to get even more exposure.

BSH or DSH?

I've heard it somehwere, but can't remember if the American short hair is suppsoed to have a U shaped muzzle, and the BSH is supposed have more of a V shape?
