Our older cat is named "Meices", because when we first got her, she was so tiny she reminded me of a mouse...and I started calling her that, which sort of evolved to its current form after the old cartoon where the cat always calls the mice "You miserable Meeses!". The spelling is my husband's idea because of some misbegotten version of the old "i before e except after c" rule. Don't ask, I don't get it either!

The new kitten seems to have become "Onyx" by default, as no one could agree on a name, and no one actively hated Onyx. Which I'm glad of, because it was among my favorites of the list we had going.

My favorite cat name, though is a longer story, if you will indulge me.

Some years ago, we lived across the street from a priest who had a couple of cats, one of which had kittens...and the kittens, as they got old enough, sometimes used to stray over to our side of the street, where my kids would play with them.

My younger son, who was about 2 at the time, had a favorite, which he kept callng "Farfel kitty", and though we had no idea why, it was such a cute name that it stuck.

It wasn't until some time later that my daughter deciphered it...he was calling it "Father Phil's kitty".

Anyway, we liked it so much that we ended up giving the name to a subsequent cat a few years later.

We also sort of had a stray which was hanging around here for a few months and disappeared shortly after we finally threw up our hands and decided we had another cat and took her in to the vet's for shots and stuff.

She was one of those really mixed-up mottled tortoiseshells...My son called her "Eggplant" because he claimed she "looks just like that eggplant stuff you make" (with the cheese and tomato and whatnot...I guess he was kind of right)

My black cat is named Max. She was named Meg at the humane society but we didn't like that name for her so I used to love the show Dark Angel and the main character is named Max and she is a darker cat-like character so it fit.

My white and black longhair cat is named Oreo. She is a big fluff ball and looked like some one had taken her out of the garbage when I picked her up. She was named Frostfur and that just didn't work for me and Oreo just sorta stuck.

If I get anymore cats we are going to give them 'disney' 'magic' or 'ariel'. i really want a disney theme named cat. They have one at the humane society named 'ariel'...I think that's a sign lol

Well Lilly I named after my favorite flower =)
When I was little and we first got mercury, my mom was saying we should choose a unique name and I said Mercury but I was just kidding.... who names their cat that? ut I guess she liked it lol.
And With our new 5 kittens and the mama, my friend and I named em after chaacters in our favorite books The Twilight Series... So The mom is Esme, and the kittens are Roasalie, Jasper, Edward, Emett, and Alice.
They names sound a little unusual but we're big fans of the books =)

Hi everyone, I'm new here but I thought I'd just jump into the conversation. I have two cats (rescues) and I call them Gabby (talks a lot) and Moxie (she's got lots of moxie). In fact, I just finished writing an article about this very topic - how my cats got their names. 1. Kirara, (Key La La) if you've ever seen the anime "Inuyasha," that's where that comes from. She looks nothing like her, I just thought it was a cute name.

2. Kit Kat Sh*t Chàt (or sweet chàt)..because it's funny, and it fits her personality..when she was a kitten, her and the litter box were attached..and we had problems with her slapping..."things" out of the litter box onto the floor and playing with those "things" as toys.

1) Nannette, after the musical "No, no Nannette!" This came about because during her first few days in the house, it seemed like all I was telling her was "No!"

2) Hogni (pronounced Hawk-nee) is an Icelandic word for a male cat. I was stationed in Iceland when he came into my life, and it seemed fitting. (He also earned several nicknames over the years, some of which are not printable.)

3) Zorro - he's a tuxedo cat, and it looks like he's wearing a black mask, so Zorro he became. He's a very vocal cat, who always wants to be fed, so he sometimes goes by "Mr. Mouth" or "Garbage Gut."

4) Blackbird - he's coal black, and the shelter where I adopted him had his name as "Stinks," which, somehow, didn't seem appropriate. A couple of days after he came home, I had friends over and he came tearing through the house, jumping up in the air in what became his signature style, and and my friend says to him "what do you think you are, an SR-71 jet?" The SR-71 is a super-fast, super-high-flying military aircraft, nicknamed the "Blackbird." It fit! He goes by "Blackie", but has also earned a few nicknames in his two years in residence.

Byakko and Suzaku comes from the manga "Fushigi Yugi". They are japanese gods. Part of a set of 4 gods related with the cardinal points. They appear in other manga or anime stories.

The god Byakko is a white tiger and I liked it for my grey tiger.

When I took Suzaku from the shelter her name was Chufa, but as she wasn't used to that name I renamed her and choose another of that set of gods. Suzaku is a chinese phoenix.

Tomorrow will come home my third cat. Her name is Marena and I'm not going to change it. In her foster house they love her and I don't want to cut that link with her pass. With Suzaku it was different. She had been in the shelter only for two months, and no one had an special relationship with her.

Of course I don't know where Marena's name comes from.

Me and my boyfriend have a KitKat-His cat. And a Kirara-My cat. There sisters from different litters. Same mom same dad, act completely different. KitKat was just random and fit her well, and Kirara is from Inuyasha......

Bluemax (BSH)

Montana Copper. How we named him Bluemax - I wanted to name him blue because his color is blue and my husband wanted to name him max, so, we compromised and named him Bluemax.

Snowy (part siamese)

My sister named her Snowy because when she was born she was the color of snow.

Scooter (domestic shorthair)

When we got him, he was scooting everywhere and my husband wanted to call him scooter.

Snowflake got her name because the day I adopted her it was snowing.

My brother named Kiara after Simba's daughter in the Lion King II. What's funny is I found out later that it means "small, dark one" and she's all black!

Aila or Ailurette is a combination of Ailuros and Bastette, the two names for the Egyptian Cat Goddess.

Aster kept his name from the shelter we adopted him from. It also means "star" in Old English.

Leo or Leonardo DaVinci Mischevous was named because he was so smart and his thinking often got him into mischief.

Pharaoh was named because his markings make him look like an Egyptian wild cat, and when his ears are straight up and forward, it looks like he's wearing an egyptian head dress. I also find it fun to call him "King Tut Pharaoh Butt" when he's getting into mischeif!

Ling's name is LingLing. Our tortie/white barn cat had 4 kittens - all the same - blue tabbys/white (3 females/2 males). When they were a month old, they developed blue points on their ears, face, paws, and tail AND still were tabby striped on the body. At 2 months old, the blue points became seal points with tabby bodies. At that point, they were so unusual (I've bred cats and know genetics) that I thought I'd give them all "oriental" names cause of the points - so we had Ling, Ping and Pong (brothers) and Ying and Yang (sisters). By the time they were 3-4 months old EVERY kitten had turned into a black/white kitten - genetically impossible.

Charlie was named after the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - cause he is a chocolate Ocicat and that name just "fit".

Next spring I'll be getting another Oci (cinnamon or cinnamon-silver) and his name will be Captain Jack Sparrow (from the Pirates movie).

I was having a really hard time coming up with a name for my new kitty. I knew it had to be a special name. I had just ordered a wholesale case of eyeshadow and the name brand was Arabella. Well I looked at it and shrieked to my mom "that's it!". It fits perfectly. I think Arabella sounds like a princess name and she prances around and acts all dainty like a princess, so it's great.

Stormy and Cassie were both adopted. Stormy was named by a state trooper who found her stray during a snow storm, and even though she is a gray cat and not white, I liked the name so I kept it. Cassie was also adopted and went by the name Sassy. For some reason, I kept calling her Cassie so I changed it to Cassie. Bonnie

I got Honey at the shelter with the name of "Honey Bunz". Well I didn't really like the Bunz part so I don't call her that. At the vets she is still known as Honey Bunz but to me she is just known as Honey, or Honey Bunny or Hun Bun. She comes of all of those names. My boyfriend also fondly calls her Hell Kitty, which fits much better than Honey I think

My daughter named our 2. When Ashley brought home the first kitten she said here's Jasmine. When we got the second kitten a year later Ashley said we're going to call her Chloe. I've no idea why these two names but they must like them because they respond to them. Jasmine is black and gray with white paws and face. Chloe is a light red. They are both tabbys and very loveable when they want love. I had cats when I was growing up but they were all outside cats. When cats want attention they will seek it out. You can't force yourself on them.

I named my male cat Oliver because of the movie Oliver and Company. He is not orange like the cat in the movie, but he had the same looking face. When I got him, I was told he was a female and was named Tinkerbell. Turned out, he was not a female.

I named my female cat Abby because I like the name. It took 2 weeks to name her because I couldn't figure out a name that would fit her.

HRM Princess Sweet Pea Fuzzybutt Dragon *** because when she was an only kitty she was very sweet, and she had no inclinations to aid us in naming her, so she became Sweet Pea (Dragon *** because when she first came she had room clearing gas) She is an incredibly chatty cat, she'll carry on a conversation for a good 5 minutes.

This is Loki Kibbleslayer, the Sun God. He is my main sun worshipper, he detests being cold or even lukewarm. Loki because in the Norse Pantheon Loki was the Trickster, in the earliest legends he wasn't evil just liked to remind the gods to laugh at themselves. That's what this kitty does, reminds us to laugh at ourselves. Kibbleslayer because that's the only thing he has an inclination to kill, a bowl of kibble.

Gabriel after the Archangel Gabriel, he has a slightly lighter spot above his nose like the Angel Gabriel put his finger there and said "shhhh"- it didn't work this cat is a huge talker!

I try to name the kitty after an event or use Celtic names. I had a litter on Presidents's Day so they are nicked name after the Presidents. They will be adopted and given other names. If they are remaining with me then they have Celtic names that respond to their personalities, Like Mynney, or Anna Bella.

Movies and TV shows. My daughter has done most of the naming. Pocahontas(disney movie), Casper-came with the name, Sabrina(the teenage witch), later years Hoshi(star trek), Eve & Eli (actually from Xena).

Two of my purr babies came with their names - Nefer-kitty & Caeser. They had lost everything but their names so I didn't want to take that away from them.

The others:

Squeakie-pie, because she makes a little squeaking sound.
Tiger Boy, because he is a handsome orange striped miniature tiger in appearance.
Midnight Louie, my solid black boy. I named after the cat detective in Carole Nelson Douglas's mystery series.

BooBoo, because I thought it was cute.
Tabby, because that is what she is a tabby cat.
Oreo, He is black and has a white spot on his neck and a little dot of white on one if his back paws toe.
Precious, because I like the name and she is really sweet and motherly.
Princess, because she acts like a princess and my niece wanted me tooname her that.
Cinderella, another name my niece gave me and it fits because of her markings.
Punkin, because I wanted to name a orange cat that.
Mocha, because of his coloring and I thought he was a girl and didn't change his name.
Tabasco, because he has orange marks and I thought he looked more like an Tabasco than a Talouse.
Snuggles, because she looked snuggley and she was named Berlioz because her previous owner thought she was a he.
Blossom, because she is as cute as flower and the name was better than Marie.

I had to choose other because I've done many things. Apollo and Adonis because they are handsome. Tweety Bird was a stray that would come up and rub on you to be petted, but the second you'd reach with both hands, she'd practically fly away! Cricket and Lady Bug because they were so little. Pepper and Cinnamon because their colors are like the spices. The most recent momma and babies are Jasmine and her little bunch of flowers; Lily, Rose, Daisy, Sweet Pea and Buttercup.

There are others, but you get the idea!!!

I am a breeder myself. I sometimes name my cats of foriegn names, like Koshki means "cat" in Russian. I also name some of my cats from songs, like a song called "Sugar", and I name my cat after that(Which is Sugar). Those are some ways I name my cats.

I didn't vote because I have three cats and didn't know how to vote!

Ginger was a 6-month-old shelter kitty and we thought it would be too confusing to her to change her name. It fits! We also call her Pretty Baby Girl, which she likes.

Harley was also a shelter kitty, but he was only 2 and a half months old - he was originally named Que and we didn't like that name. We heard a Harley Davidson go by one night during his first week with us, and a little bit later Que was sitting on my shoulder purring, and he has a really LOUD purr, and I commented that he sounded like the motorcycle. So he became Harley! He's also called Handsome Harley, Harley-Monster, Harley Dennis (the Menace), and B-a-a-a-d Little Boy!

Kearstie is a Scottish Fold. For those of you who don't know, the breed originated in Scotland, and its claim to fame is that many cats of this breed have ears that fold forward and downward like a cap, hence the name Scottish Fold. So when we made the appointment to go look at her, we started looking for Scottish girls' names, and found the name Kirstie. I modified the name to play on the folded ears - K-ear-stie, which our Kearstie does have. She likes to be called Kearstie-Kitty or Pretty Little Girl too.

I adopted "Baby" from the Humane Society almost 2 yrs ago and he had his name when I got him . Rather than confuse him any more than he was we left it. In the long run it has fit him, when he doesn't see me he walks around and cries like a baby!!!!! I wouldn't change it for anything!

I named my oldest cat Grace when she was a kitten because she was the clumsiest cat I had ever seen in my life, and she still is! My second cat looks alot like Grace but she has a white mustache, I couldn't name her Tash cause thats a boys name so I named her Tasha My 3rd cat is named after a famous fish we all know and love, Nemo. He is orange with white stripes just like the fish. My 7 yr. old named him that and it just fit.

Cali's name came from when I first met her in the early morning light and couldn't really tell she was a torti not a calico. But I think Cali sounds prettier than Torti anyway. Her full name is Princess Calico. The princess part just absolutely suits her. Even as a stray begging for food she had a royal, holier-than-thou attitude.

Minuet got her name through a chain of stream of consciousness thinking. She was born to a barn cat named "Little" (the runt of her litter). The barn's name is Pepperwood Farm. So my first thought was "Pepper", but I didn't like that. Then I thought of "Piper" because it sounds like "Pepper", but I didn't like that either. The "Piper" got me on a music theme and "Minuet" sounded pretty. I also thought it was fitting that I sometimes shorten it to "Mini" since her mom is "Little". I named her when she was just a week old. Now I think the name fits because when she meows it sounds like a short melodic tune which is the definitition of a minuet. I kinda wish she had a more horsey name because she was a third generation barn kitty, but oh well.

i named him Tagg, i found him while camping at a site called Tagg run. we were in a game room there and outside next to the building there was a huge pile of wood with alot of wild kittens in it, so i decided to go try to catch one and they all ran away except for him, he crouched down and hissed at me and i snatched him up and put him inside my hoodie. my dad kept saying all night you better put him back he could have rabies or something(i was 21 yrs old and a dog person never owned a cat) but it was love at first sight and no matter what anybody said he was mine forever!!! so i fed him hot dogs for the night and put him in my tent and he didnt pee or poop in there, the next morning took him down with me to the showers and he used the bathroom while i did and i showered and went home with him. he was 5 wks old and sooooo tiny and cute(thought he was a girl at first) never shy and always loveable. i am now 27 and he is the light of my life. i taught him to sit and fetch and he greets everbody and everybody loves him!!! here are some pics when i first got him

Each cat got named for his or her personality = mostly. Bandit has a mask hence bandit; Dumbo has the biggest ears I've ever seen = Dumbo; Cocoa Puff (Coke) has a very long fancy name cause I registered her - Miss Cocoa PUff of Hazelwood I think, she's still just plain old coke; and Nudnik - well she is an absolute pest so we named her nudnik because it means pest in Yiddish and I didn't want to call her pest, it didn't sound right - but for her we put our choices in a hat and picked the name from those in the hat. Wan-Lea Wendy Avalon: We don't know where the "Wendy" part came from. Wan-Lea is the name of the cattery, and Avalon was her grandmother. She is a retired show cat, so she was named by the breeder long before we met her.
