In no time at all, she has that dog following HER lead, taking HER orders!

For example, I had a guest come over once. This person, unexpectedly, turned up with a 4 month old Yellow Lab. Pretty good sized dog! Well, in a heart beat, she had the dog chase her .... she darted behind the sofa ... he was scrabbling to get behind the couch, when she came out the other end, walked over to his side, and asked him what he was doing.
"I'm going to get a cat" said he.
"You don't say?" said the cat.
"That's right ...HEY!!!" ... and the chase was on again.

In no time at all, they were the best of friends.

She'll greet nearly any dog, without hesitation.

Perhaps, most surprising, she loves watching dogs on TV. Once she sat in front of the TV for a half-hour, watching a program about the wild dogs of Africa.

That said, she does play well with my other cat, Motzie. And, when a feral cat once fought Motzie, Vonnie came running to help her friend! (BTW, that feral, and Motzie, became best friends after that tussle).

RE: How does your cat handle dogs?

Depending on your cat's temperament it might work, but Star is very headstrong and acts like my hubby and I are HER pets so a dog was not a good idea.

We had a black lb mix for a week and she beat the poor dog silly. They all get along GREAT, like one happy family. When we got the dog I already had 3 cats. We never had any problems. The dog loved playing with one of my cats in particular. The cats never once hissed or ran from the dog. My cats all rub themselves against the dog all the time. In the evenings we all hang out together in the den watching TV. I think the dog thinks she's just another cat. The cats seem to treat her like one anyway. I doubt all dogs would behave this way with cats. Golden retrievers are well known to be sweet and gentle, which is why I agreed to get this dog. I wouldn't have considered any other breed. I'm definitely not a dog person, but we -me and the cats- tolerate her fine.

RE: How does your cat handle dogs?

I answered hisses and puffs up, but what Tripod does actually depends on the dog. I've seen her check out a small dog, about her size, and the dog checked her out, that was it. Larger dogs, it depends on the dog. When my youngest sister brings her large Mexican Hairless, she says he thinks cats are boring; Tripod hisses and hides from him.

When my nephew brings his Italian Greyhound over, the dog checks her out from a distance, and Tripod hisses yet keeps an eye on him, or hides. If she doesn't hide, she guards her territory. One of these days, a dog is gonna get swatted. She may be 17 years old, but she can still be a little spitfire when she wants to be!

RE: How does your cat handle dogs?

Stupid Dog (aka Polly) escaped the back yard again the other day. When I brought her through the house, she ran straight up to Cheshire and started sniffing him all over. He was so shocked and didn't know what to think, he just tensed up and leaned away. It was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen. Cheshire's been a life long house cat, so he's never had to deal with dogs.

RE: How does your cat handle dogs?

When I first brought the dog home the cat tried to let her know who was boss. The dog, being just a puppy at the time, thought the kitty was playing. In a few weeks they were chasing each other around the house playing. First the dog was chasing the cat up the stairs. Then the cat was chasing the dog down the stairs. Then they would turn around and the dog would chase the cat up the stairs. They would do this over and over again. They get along just fine. They are good friends. The cat is now 15 and the dog is 12.

RE: How does your cat handle dogs?

Byakko is interested, and follows them. And Kirara...well, my house was her territory, then my mom brought her 3 beagles in, and she loved those dogs. They played all the time. Never fought. We lost one of my beloved dogs to heartworms this year, and while he was sick (We fought to save him), she sat at the doorway of the room he loved to sleep in and just watched him. All in all, I think cats and dogs go perfectly together. I love dogs, I'll always have one, and I love cats, I'll always have one.

RE: How does your cat handle dogs?

Until recently, we have always had multiple dogs and cats together. For the first time we are dogless.

Dogs and cats can get to be great friends! It's easier to introduce a puppy or a kitten to an adult of opposite species and it is easiest of all to introduce a puppy to a kitten.

To introduce two adults to each other is harder, but eventually they come to understand that the other is not going to go away. Just make sure if you're bringing an adult dog into the house that it won't treat the cat like a rodent and kill it. My neighbor had such a dog.

RE: How does your cat handle dogs?

Well, Shadow has a poodle "sister", and they get along ok. Sometimes Cinnamon gets a little "commanding", and scares Shadow so that he runs off and hides. Our neighbors have dogs, but I've never seen how Shadow reacts, but I'd imagine, since he is a bit of a fraidy cat, that he'd probably run off and hide asap if they came near him.

RE: How does your cat handle dogs?

None of the above. We have a lab who has raised kittens. If you are talking about the initial reactions - its hissing and arching back and some run, some stand their ground.

Charlie stood his ground and did a little hissing at Keno when they first met. But within 2-3 days he was pretty confident and actually jumped on the dog and played with her tail. He was about 4 months old at the time.

Keno being a large dog, was put in a down stay when around the kittens till they were used to her.

RE: How does your cat handle dogs?

Gabe hissed and and ran from my sisters' dog, but he'd never seen a small dog before, the neighbor's dog is a large dog and doesn't seem to other him, but my sister's dog is a peke and I don't think he's ever seen a toy dog before.

How does your cat handle dogs?

I was kinda enerested in this since I might be concidering getting a dog.
