Luck is doing just fine. I was to find a native speaker to take to the vet last time and laurie was right, most Korean pet owners just want the vet to give meds so he rarely gives oral meds. I have to bring lucky back on more time tomorrow to take the stitches out, but he is in fine spirits and sleeps next to me every night.

Today is rained very hard and Lucky was watching by the window and was extra "lovey" to me all day. I wonder if that's his way of saying thank you that for now he can watch the rain from the inside instead of being stuck in it. In truth, though having a pet like lucky is as much of a gift to me.

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER
todd8771 (7/4/2009)
The vet said everything went well and asked me to bring him back yesterday.
Todd, you really need to take an interpreter with you to speak to the vet. My best guess is that perhaps your vet doesn't have access to oral antibiotics, or perhaps he is used to dealing with clients who can't administer oral meds to cats, so it is simply his protocol to administer post-surgical antibiotics by injection. But you won't know until you ask.

How is Lucky doing now? It's quite common for cats to "hold a grudge" for a while after an unpleasant experience, but Lucky will get over it. Just be patient and do what you can to reassure him that you're not trying to kill him.

Keep us updated on his condition and behavior, please.

Laurie

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER

So, how is Lucky? Is he swollen, oozing, eating, drinking, up and about? If all those questions check out then I wouldn't worry. If you do want to visit the vet again, without Lucky, take a friend to interpret. In case you do need a vet before you come home it's best to stay on good terms. Did he get vaccinations and did you get papers saying he did?

I hope Lucky has forgiven you! If not take an interpreter (sp?). Ask about antibiotics you can give at home and if there is something he is worried about. All I know is I take the cat in in the am, empty stomach, and pick him up at the end of the day. It is usually just that simple. All the vet says is to bring him back in a year when the vaccinations are due! I really feel for you!! Dealing with an animal you don't know much about in another country! Just the thought can set my head spinning!!!!

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER

For me, that is very odd. Male cats are relatively easy, not major surgery. I can't remember, old age, but if anything the vet might give me antibiotics (pills or liquid) to give at home. The only reason for a trip back would be infection, what the antibiotics are for, or swelling, oozing, just some rare problem. Does his testicle area look swollen or wet, does he act like he's in pain? Did you get any idea if this vet is familiar with treating cats? Lucky really should be doing well by now. I hope this vet doesn't see you as a financial resource!!! Anyway tell me how Lucky looks and is acting.

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER

According the the Guinness Book of Records, the longest-lived cat was Cremem Puff, who died at the age of 38 years 3 days. Creme Puff's owner also owned the previous recordholder, Grandpa Rexs Allen, who died aged 33 years 2 months. My Tripod is 18, and hopefully she'll live longer than that.

Did you ask the vet why he needed to see Lucky on his day off? Also, if a cat associates only bad things--like a scary car ride, then a strange-smelling place where he gets poked with needles and prodded, etc., he's not going to take kindly to the carrier. Try to get Lucky to associate the carrier with good things, if possible. Take him for a ride in it--working your way up gradually, of course--that results in his getting treats afterwards. No stops at vet's offices. Try to keep him guessing. That's going to take time, but if it's really bad, you may ask your vet for a tranquilizer pill for Lucky to give to him before you have to put him in the carrier to take him to the vet. I'm assuming Korean vets don't make housecalls.

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER

Hi,

I could really use some advice right now.

I took Lucky to the vet on Friday to get fixed. Just don't shine it directly into his eyes
Catnip - both fresh and dried makes many cats either go completely bonkers or totally zoned out. They love the stuff!
Ping Pong balls - LOTS of fun to chase around
Ribbon and string - If you drag this around your apt, Lucky will probably have great fun chasing after it, but do NOT leave it out for him to play with alone. Cats may ingest strings and require emergency surgery to untangle it from their intestines!

Those should get you started. Most likely, Lucky will find his own toys around your apt, too. Just make sure they're not small enough for him to swallow.

cats don't usually live past 13, which seems conservative to me...thoughts?

That may be true in Korea if cat's receive substandard care, but here in the States, with proper vet care and nutrition, it's not uncommon for cats to live into their late teens and early twenties. Of course as with any animal, genetics plays a part in longevity, too. Some cats die younger than others.

Laurie

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER

In an ideal world I'd love to let Lucky outside , but of he ever got away I would NEVER see him again, so he's only staying indoors. To that end, can anyone help me think of ways to excersise him?

Also, I don't think I mentioned it, but the vet says Lucky looks to be about 3, so older than I thought. he also says cats don't usually live past 13, which seems conservative to me...thoughts?

Todd

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER

I totally agree with Laurie - while it might be safe enough in some areas of the United States to allow a cat outdoors, one does have to keep in mind the culture and customs of the area in which one lives. Many other countries do not place the same value on pets as we do in the States. Even in this country, there are many dangers for pets roaming outdoors, except in some of the more rural areas.

You've rescued this kitty once already and from what you've written, have already begun to fall in love - it would be terribly tragic to lose him now by letting him explore the outdoors!

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER

Cat Purrson (6/30/2009)
What your boy needs is lots of understanding and care, while maintaining his former lifetsyle to keep him happy. Your vet needs to update his information. I don't know if they ship overseas or not, but check out Doctors Foster and Smith at www.drsfostersmith.com ; they have just about everything. You can order online, but check whether they ship overseas or not before ordering. If you have a friend or relative in the States, maybe you could have your order shipped to them, and they can reship it to you if F&S doesn't ship overseas. A simple flea comb used daily can help you get any fleas off Lucky; diatomeaceous earth can take care of any fleas in the carpet.

I'm renting a room from a Vietnamese couple, and my room is 12' x 13', not counting closet space (7' x 2 1/2'); my cat Tripod has her litterbox, food and water dishes in the closet (no door), and she's fine with that. She's okay in a small room, but sometimes goes outside my room to investigate the hall if I have the door open for ventilation. I'm on the second floor, and she's really not interested in going outside. She's 18 years old, has been on planes a couple of times, and together we have moved 7 times--8 if you count when I brought her home from my uncle's where she was born. She was born without a left foreleg--shoulder joint only--hence the name.

Lucky will have to have all vaccinations current, with paperwork from your vet proving this fact, plus the rabies certification before you can put him on a plane to return to the States. When I flew with my cat Tripod twice, she had to have her vaccination records within 10 days of the flight. I'm guessing microchipping is unavailable there in Korea; that's the best form of identification as it is updatable, and never gets lost. But I guess they don't have the scanners for them there, either. Oh, well, you'll be coming home in eight months; just keep an eye on him.

I've read where in some parts of Asia butchers catch cats and sell them for meat. They even butcher them to order for customers. Hopefully things will start to change soon. But it's going to be very slow going, as traditions are hard to break down.

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER

todd8771 (6/29/2009)
How do I food portions. I just have dry food for the moment. I fill up the bowl, Lucky eats through out the day, when it is empty, i refill it. Now's it;s ok cause it's underweight but eventually he;ll get fat if I keep doing that? ideas?

First, canned food is MUCH healthier for cats than dry, so I highly recommend you switch him to canned cat food ASAP before he becomes addicted to kibble.

Some cats are very good at self-regulating their weight, and some aren't. The good self-regulators can have food left out for them all the time, and they won't eat to the point of becoming overweight. But if Lucky does turn out to be a porker, you can feed him portioned meals just twice a day. As far as the portion amounts are concerned, here in the States it is pretty much standard practice for cat food manufacturers to recommend feeding 1/3-1/2 MORE than is necessary to maintain proper weight - meaning that if the feeding guidelines on the packaging recommends feeding a cat Lucky's size 8 oz of canned food a day, then 4 oz is probably a much more realistic amount.

The easiest way to monitor Lucky's weight and appropriate food portions is by buying a digital baby scale and weighing him every two weeks. That way you'll know whether he's gaining or losing weight and can adjust food portions before things get out of hand.

Also, i asked the vet for a collar and he said cats hate collar and strangle themselves, but I'm worried if lucky escapes I will NEVER see him again.

Cats can adjust to wearing collars, but you should only have him wear one when you are in the apt to monitor his reaction until he is fully accustomed to it. You want to adjust it so that it's perfectly comfortable but snug enough to disallow him from getting a paw caught in it if he starts fussing with it. If there are any pet stores in Korea, you should be able to purchase a suitable collar there.

BTW, if you should ever feel the need to leash Lucky for any reason, NEVER attach a leash to a cat's collar. Most cats don't respond to leashes kindly and will strangle themselves or squirm out of their collars in the attempt to escape the restriction. In that situation, you should always use a cat harness instead of a collar. A harness fits both around the cat's neck and around his girth behind the front legs, with the attachment being above his shoulder blades. I do not recommend ever leaving a harness on a cat unattended, however, because they can squirm around and get their legs stuck in the harness.

Laurie

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER

that's somebody else's problem

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER

todd8771 (6/29/2009)
that's true. and on the bright side, I think I'm fairly certain he's not pregnant

LOL! They'll be able to explain the options and requirements to you so that you have plenty of time to make all necessary arrangements.

Happy days for you and Lucky!

Laurie

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER

Don't worry about the whole Holly Lucky name change, my first cat was a stray, we named him Daisy because he didn't have any male parts, well when we took him to the vet Daisy turned out to be a neutered male, so hid name was Daisy Boy (that poor cat). It is really good that Lucky was healthy. You have one lucky cat.

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER

Hi all,

Here's an update for you. First, and this is a little embarrassing, I finally got a good look and Holly's underside today and found a couple of testicles, so Holly is Holly now Lucky

Anyway, things with Lucky have been amazing. He has slept with me both nights and is currently sleeping in my lap as I type. He is more loving than I could ever imgaine.

I took him to a vet today, one that has a lot of experience with cats. He got a perfect bill of health (pending the results of the bloodowrk). he didn't even have fleas or mites, but the vet gave me a treatment to be on the safe side. the only thing that was wrong, was he was slighly underweight but not for long

I got him vaccinated and his nails trimmed. Even remarked (through my translator) this was one of the friendliest cats he'd ever seen. he didn't even squirm during the bloodwork or nail trimming.

On Friday he's going back to the vet to get fixed, the results from the blood work and he's getting a urine test. thanks all so much for your support. I was freaking out when I took him in, but things have worked out better than I ever could have asked for!

Todd

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER

I have never used soft paws but I have heard from numerous people that it is a great product. Your vet can do it, but I'd recommend that you ask your vet to show you how to - you'll be doing it about every 3-4 weeks over the cat's lifetime (or however long you are able to keep the cat). Once you learn, it takes less than 5 minutes.

As for the cat scratching furniture, you can train it not to do so. You also may want to look into Soft Paws - false fingernails for cats - they limit the damage cat-scratching does without hurting the cat or permanently damaging its claws. Their website even includes some pretty good instructions on how to clip a cat's claws. You can get clear ones or various colors - personally, I'd get colored ones because they're easier to see if one comes loose. Here's their website: http://www.softpaws.com/

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER

Don't declaw for all of the above reasons!! I equipped myself with a nail trimmer and a cat tree for my Tommy and they are more than sufficient! It just takes a little training and patience to teach your kitty that the scratch post is the appropriate place to do what comes naturally to her!

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER
todd8771 (6/28/2009)
Thanks all!

Laurie, are you a vet?
Nope, but I have been taking care of cats for more than 40 yrs (I currently live with 16 of the beasts). There's not much they haven't taught me about themselves.

Anyway, if anyone would like to offer an opinion on if I should have the vet declaw Holly, I'd really appropriate it.

Declawing is not what the name implies. It is not simply removing the claws. It is amputating each of the toes down to the first joint. It is equivalent to having all of your fingertips amputated down to the joint below your fingernails, except that you wouldn't have to bear all of your weight on the amputated stubs and walk around on them the way a declawed cat does.

In some (but not all) cases, declawed cats will experience chronic, lifelong pain in their feet. They may avoid using the litterbox for that reason (which may explain why so many declawed cats end up abandoned in shelters). They may also turn into biters, having had their primary defense system amputated.

In Holly's specific case, since her future with you is somewhat uncertain, it would be a great risk to declaw her and then possibly have her end up with someone who allows her outside, completely defenseless with no claws with which to fight and climb from danger.

So my opinion, if it isn't clear already, is to NEVER declaw a cat unless the cat has a physcial deformity or injury that necessitates it for the cat's own physical benefit.

quote]ps. holly is purring in my lap as a write this.
Warms the cockles of my heart. :-)

Laurie

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER

k, i won't

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER

Please don't declaw Holly, it is a cruel, evil operation. Claws aren't a problem unless the cat has no place to sharpen their claws, just make sure Holly has a scratching post taller than she is so she can stretch out. Please don't declaw her.

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER

Thanks all!

Laurie, are you a vet?

Anyway, if anyone would like to offer an opinion on if I should have the vet declaw Holly, I'd really appropriate it. But it also makes me doubt my faith in people. Who would throw such a loving animal in the dumpster?

There's no end to the cruelties that some humans inflict on the vulnerable. But if Holly hadn't been dumped, she wouldn't have come into your life. If there is a divine plan, Holly is part of yours.

Kneading is what young kittens do to stimulate milk production from their mothers' teats. As adults, cats retain that behavior and do it as a form of self-comforting and as an expression of that comfort. Holly feels very safe with you. What a wonderful turn of events for both of you.

Holly still looks very dirty from the street, whats the best way to clean her, or is that something the vet will do tomorrow?

Cats are generally self-cleaning, fastidious creatures. Holly will most likely clean herself once she feels more settled. Unless she is covered with something that would be dangerous for her to ingest, like motor oil, I wouldn't recommend bathing her. First, bathing will dry the skin. Second, most cats HATE to be bathed and will use whatever defenses they have to avoid it. If you're not big on the idea of being bitten and scratched, don't try to bathe Holly (esp. since you have no experience handling cats).

Also, is there a good way to get rid of cat hair on clothing?

Lint brushes and sticky tape can help remove cat hair, but you will quickly accept the fact that cat hair is a home decoration, clothing accessory, and food condiment. ;-)

Laurie

RE: PLEASE HELP, I FOUND A CAT IN A DUMPSTER

I'm so happy to see that things aren't turning out as bad as we feared! Of course, if you can get it, the best shampoo is made for cats.

Ordinarily you shouldn't need to give her a bath, they're self-cleaning creatures.
