We moved their litter box from one of the second floor bedrooms to the basement while the carpet installation was being done. Both cats used the box in the basement during the day and it is the litter box they have had for the past three years.

Fast forward four days later, and one of them, if not both, are using the second floor carpet. There is pee everywhere and I found three poops. Strange thing they are not going the bathroom in the bedroom where their litter box had previously been located for the past three years. It is a completely different room.

We are leaving tomorrow for Florida, and I don't know what to do. Do i move their box back up from the basement to the original room, or leave it in the basement and put up a baby gate blocking access from them going upstairs to the second floor. I love these cats, but I saved up this money forever for this carpet--times are tough, you know?

I know everyone says you need to eliminate "medical issues" but this is not that, the urination/pooing started happening as soon as we let them up from the basement.

I don't want my entire carpet to be ruined when I get home from my vacation. I have two cats (brother and sister) and they have NEVER had an accident in this house and we have lived here for over 3 years. They have always used their litter boxes. Please help....

Littermaid or Cat Genie?

Hello Everyone! I've posted before and I just don't know what to do. My 3yo male cat Lucky is peeing where he shouldn't. He is indoor/outdoor. I let him out when I wake up, he comes in when I go to work and if I'm not home too late I let him out when I get home and he comes in before I go to bed. On the weekends of course when I'm home all day he goes in and out whenever he wants.
The problem started about 5 months ago. He was peeing on the little rug I had in front of the staircase going upstairs. After several washings and spryaings with Natures Miracle I decided I was just going to do away with the rug....problem solved......or so I thought. He started now peeing downstairs in the basement in front of the kitchen sink. So I cleaned that up several times. Got fed up and just finally shut the door so he can't even get in that room. I sprayed the floor with the Nature's Miracle, replaced the area rug in there, shut the door and he hasn't been in that room for about 3 weeks. Well last night my fiance forgot to shut the door. Can you guess what I found this morning right in that same spot!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Obviously the Nature's Miracle isn't doing the job!

I do have another cat, 1 1/2yo. They get along great! I also have 2 litterboxes in the basement. In the room next to the room where Lucky is peeing. You walk down the stairs and turn right to go to the litterboxes and left to go into the Family room. Why he's choosing to go left and pee in that room is something that I've been trying to figure out for a long time now.

I feel bad keeping him out of that room b/c we have a high window sill and he LOVES sleeping on it but I can't trust him to be in there. Please help! I don't know what to do....thank you.
I should also add that I have brought him to the vet and he has gotten a clean bill of health.

peeing or spraying ??...

Was going to add photos of them first but wasn't prepared to use a "Hosting" site. Will just go on with the problem we are experiencing. We rescued 2 cats 4 years ago from the local shelter. Dakota, our male is now 3 and was neutered just before we got him on a "second chance" program. Our female, "Zoey" is suppose to be a year older. The shelter gave (sold) her to us and insisted she was spayed. Well, she goes in and out of her "heat" cycles and the vet didn't see any scars indicating she is spayed. So, we live with her thing. I know, we should have her spayed but... almost $200.00 here we don't have laying around. Anyway, my understanding is that only the males spray and neutering is suppose to stop this behavior. Am I right or wrong here ? I am more "up" on dogs than cats. This is the first time I put an honest effot into owning cats. We were told before we went to the shelter to get two so one has the other to keep occupied. So we got 1 each. Back to our issue here. Twice in the last three months now, we found clean laundry, first time was our bag of clothes packed for camping (got to the camper and everything stinks),second time ws today, I went to grab a sweatshirt to wear outside and found two in the "clean clothes" basket saturated. NOW, this isn't a strong amonia like urine smell, it is more faint and annoying nasty smell. This is why I am thinking spraying but, like enough to saturate 2 sweatshirts ??? Any suggestions or solutions ? I can give more details if needed here. I don't want to get rid of them for this, I just want it to stop !! Maybe I don't keep the litter box as clean as they would like. Maybe she is doing it and not him, I don't know as I don't see it being done.

Very Frustrated

My cat isn't using his litterbox all the time. Sometimes he does, but sometimes he doesn't. The litterbox is in the basement and if he were going somewhere else in the house I'd assume he just didn't like the basement, but he is going into the basement to pee on a rug in a different area.

This has been going on for a while, I brought him to the vet to make sure it wasn't a health issue. The vet gave him a clean bill of health. I've tried the Natures Miracle and it's not working. I don't know what to do with him! He is an indoor/outdoor cat. I used to wonder if he was doing out of spite b/c I won't wake up at 5am to let him outside if he tries to wake me up. Any tips on what to do and what a good way to clean up the spot would be great. Maybe I'm not cleaning it well enough so he keeps repeating??? Recently one of the adult cats has started pooping out of the litter tray and on the floor. He still uses the litter tray to urinate but sometimes not to poop. He is a lively domestic outdoor cat but yesterday there was blood in the poop on the floor. I'm getting quite worried as this hasn't happened before as he mostly uses the litter tray to poop. This is now becoming a regular occurrence. Does anyone know how I can stop this from happening?

Thanks !

Trained but not using litter box!!

All of my cat's are litter box trained, but recently they've been going where ever. Jack is a sloppy pig (ehe) so he's perfectly fine using the littler box. But Forrest is to cool for that. He will poop (and sometimes pee too) in the LB but usually he'll go somewhere else in the bathroom. The master bathroom has the LB in it and that's the only room he goes in. He will pee on towels or clothes that some one has left on the floor, or he will claw it down from the bathtub sides, or even the shower side, and pee on it. He'll sometimes pee on clothes too. But he ONLY pees in the bathroom his LB is in. (once he peed in my mom's purse. It was so funny! ) He used to pee in the cabinets too but some tin foil stopped that.

Their Lb is large and roomy but has a cover on it. We only have one (bad idea i know) but even when we JUST cleaned it he pees on a towel! We We use either freshstep or Tidycats, and he pees either way. ARGARGARG! it it because of the hood? The old one had a hood but it had a window too and he stuck his head out for fresh air. Is it because there is not enough room or we don't clean it often enough? Is it like a territorial thing? Is it because we don't have enough litterr boxe for our two kitties? Is it because he doesn't like litter? which would be weird cuz he poops in the box always.

PLEASE HELP!

Flushable litter

I use a natural litter by arm n hammer and I really like it as far as oder control goes but I hate that it is not flushable. This started about a month ago and hasn't stopped. I've taken her to the Vet and he has checked her out and she has isn't sick or anything. He says it is more than likely a behavioral problem. He suggested we try and change kitty litters from what we were using to a scoopable brand. There are so many on the market that I didn't know which one to choose. So I chose the one that Arm & Hammer makes that all natural and I know it's made from corn too. It's also biodegradable and clumps really well.
She does use her litter pan to urinate in but not poop anymore. I'm at wits end on what to do with her and her doing this. She seems to be doing it lately on purpose. I had been getting after her and spraying her in the face with water and then putting her in her litterbox. But I found out this was the wrong way to go about this.
Here's an example... This morning I came out of my bedroom and apparently she had just finished pooping in the corner by the door to the hallway and she just looked at me to see what i would do. I called her and she looked at me and ran like we were playing try and catch me if you can.
I had read this morning to just pick up the poop on a paper towel and put it and her into her litterbox together and that this might stop the situituationt nope it didn't help any so far.
It's like she's mad at me for some reason and I have no clue why. She just seems to be pooping outside her litterbox on purpose.
Any suggestions or helping me with this would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks yall!

Himalyan Breeder Problems

We own a Male Breeding Himalayan cat who is very temperamental. Difficult because she goes right by the door, and if we put the box there, we would be unable to open the door. So I put it as close to the door as I could.

Disinfect area where she poos daily (sometimes multiple times a day). Have tried harsh bleach cleaners, Clorox Greenworks, even just Dawn dish soap and water.

Does anyone have any other suggestions I can try? I have a small ferret cage I have considered putting her in- thinking the smaller, more confined space would teach her to go in the box. But my fear with that is as soon as she is no longer in the cage, she will start going outside of the box again.

Please help!

P.S. She was de-wormed a few weeks ago. When we did check, she only had a very mild case of coccidia, so nothing major to try and treat to begin with. My 4-month-old kitten, Marlowe, started pooping on the floor/tub approximately 1 month ago. I need to stop this behavior soon, or I'll have to give him up, which would be awful because I love him and he is generally a good kitty.

When I brought him home, he always used the litterbox. I used to keep him in a spare bedroom while I was at work to keep him safe from my dog and two other cats. As he got bigger, I started leaving the door to his room open all the time. About a month later, he started to have problems. At first, he just pooped occasionally in the tub, so I closed the door to the bathroom. He was using his litter box well after that for a little while, then he started pooping the floor in his room everytime he pooped. He still always uses the litterbox for urination.

I'm worried that I caused this sweet cat to go bad. I think one of my two other cats used Marlowe's litter box and, as disgusting as it sounds, I think my dog was eating Marlowe's poop and might have scared him.

I have since tried to stop both things from happening. Marlowe's back in his room now with the door closed when I'm not home to keep the other cats out. Also I have put up a baby gate the keep the dog out.

I have three litterboxes of varying sizes and depths in his room now which are just his, with three different types of litter -- Nature's Miracle, Feline Pine, and Cat Attract. But he still is using the floor.

I've cleaned the floor with enzyme spray made for cats. I even moved the litterboxes to the two spots he poops in. So far this hasn't helped.

He's getting neutered next Friday -- I'm hoping this might help.

I'm going to call the vet and see if I can have him checked out for illness.

I have been setting him in his boxes following meals and praising him, but he just jumps out.

I'm at a loss! Please help. How do I retrain him to use the litterbox for pooping? My one male has started pretty consistently urinating outside of the litter box. I have had cats all of my life so I was pretty sure of what to do to avoid this...or so I thought.

3 litter boxes, 1 of which is in a different location, scooped 1 to 2 times daily and all three cats are fixed, we even have a Felaway plug in in the bedroom where he is most of the time.

Zep, the male who is going in the litter box is a bit more social than any of the other cats. He is from the same litter but a different father (he is all white the other two are tabbies). He doesn't pick on Hendrix but he definitely is the ruler of the house.

Hendrix is my problem male. He tends to be a bit more of a loaner and for that reason I try to be sure I give attention sometimes extra.

When Hendrix was a kitten he peed a few times outside of the box but only a handful and i assumed it was him getting used to his territory. He started back up about 2 months ago when he peed on the comforter on me while I was in bed. He is peeing in my sock drawer, any clothes that are on the ground, and yes my bed. I try to not have any clothes on the floor and something over the laundry and my sock drawer closed at all time. But it seems the second he gets a chance he will pee on whatever he can.

My husband is at his wits ends. I wash whatever I discover straight away so he or the other ones dont smell it. But I am finding things that are just old pee stains.

I dont know what to do. He goes through phases it seems...and it seems like he has stopped going out of the box...but it is either that, or I am not discovering it yet. The last thing I want is to get rid of him, and I don't want him being unhappy where he feels he needs to do this. My husband won't tolerate it much longer as he is a beginner cat lover as it is....

Oh yea I have taken him to the vet and he has a clean bill of health. I know it sounds like he is marking his territory...but they are not spray marks high on walls or anything...it is pee.

Any help or suggestions would be sooooo helpful! I am at a complete loss!!!

Lynsey
Location location!

Is there some kind of rule of where the litter boxes need to go if you have more than one cat? An honestly, I'm okay with everything except the stench from the cat urine in my bathroom sink. My bathroom sink is adjacent to the master bedroom, so no way to close it off from the cats. I've tried bleach, I've tried ammonia. The trap is clean, no solids to catch the urine. And I'm feeling guilty about all the water I'm using to flush out the sink. Any suggestions?

Suggestions on a litter cabinet?

Hi I think litter trays are a necessary evil. I'm currently looking into getting a “Littermaid” box, since I've read many positive reviews of it. I understand it can save on the amount of litter needed and make the entire process of keeping the litter box clean (and disposing of used litter) much easier. I am puzzled by the apparent wide disparity of opinions regarding it however. Many seem to love it and just as many seem to hate it.

I am even looking into the Cat Genie “self-washing, self-flushing” litter box which, although expensive, pretty much eliminates the need for regular litter.

Until one of those happens however (and if it happens), I would like to find a source for purchasing litter online and have it delivered to my home for a reasonable price. I have found it difficult to find litter online however. Many online pet supply merchants don't seem to carry it, apparently since it's weight makes it so expensive to ship.

I am wondering if anyone else here has dealt with this issue and found a good source for having litter delivered to their home. The best I have found so far appears to be PETCO, which currently has a 27 lb box of “Tidy Cats” litter for $16.99 (currently on sale for $11.99) plus $7.99 for shipping. That appears to me to be about the best I can expect to do.

I live in the USA by the way so would be looking for sources for that area. Thanks in advance for any feedback.
Non-Clump

A few weeks ago I made the mistake of buying non-clumping litter but didn't realize it until I had poured it into the litter box. It actually makes the box seem even more dirty!

New member needs help/advice desperately

Hello all!
We have a cat named Blaze, who is about one year old. We adopted him as a kitten in June of '08, so we've had him almost a year.

He took to the litterbox very easily, and from June to Feb of '09, had no issues.

In Feb. one day, he suddenly had a spell of diarrhea in our living room. It has since been a recurring problem, meds helped, and he would get to the litterbox when he had control.

We've had him to the vet about three times. They've ruled out colitis, and now believe it's a parasite, and have given us meds.

However, since it's been going on so long, Blaze is now out of the habit of using his box. We will come home from work to find feces and urine in different rooms of the house.

for the past two days, we've had to keep him in the basement because it's not carpeted, and the messes are easier to clean. The litterbox is in the basement, which is where it has always been.

My family feels bad, because we are isolating Blaze from the family, and he can sense he's being punished, but we are at our wits end. My mother has decided that Blaze has a month, 2 weeks until he's completed the meds, and an addition 2 weeks, and then he's gone.

What can we do to help Blaze get back into the habit of using his box?

Our Litterbox Idea

Because my husband and I didn't really want to spend the money on an electronic litterbox, but couldn't STAND the mess our cat was making in a regular litterbox, we came up with this:

Purchase a large, opaque rubbermaid container with a lid, like this one:

http://www.rubbermaid.com/rubbermaid/images/product/3n66_sm.jpg

Cut a hole in the side of it (right in the center) large enough for your cat to get through (my husband used a utility knife - ***BE CAREFUL***), like this:

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r317/PhantasMaria/random/3n66_sm.jpg

This helped us out so much because our cat kicks litter EVERYWHERE when he uses his litterbox. I mean, it's unbelievable. You could even make a little fabric door for it, too, if you really wanted to.

Rubber Maid Litter Pans

Hey all,

I was just woundering if anyone had a picture of a rubber maid tub that they had used for a litter pan. However, on the second year, everything just went bad. He insisted of defecating under the computer desk. At first, we steam-cleaned under the desk to get rid of his scent, then placed wooden boards over the wires(where he was going) to keep him out. After that, he simply went on or around the boards, as well as a corner in our downstairs, and possibly under my sister's bed. He absolutely refused to use the litterbox anymore. We have five cats, and two litterboxes that we scoop TWICE a day, so we felt it was territorial, or over stress. So, we placed a litterbox in my sister's room, and kept the two litterboxes downstairs. He simply ignored them and continued in his usual spots. To see if stress was the issue, we purchased 'Fel-away', which is some sort of scented plug in meant to reduce stress for cats. This worked for a few days, then he was back to his old habits.
We have tried everything! We have decided not to change cat litters, because it would effect our other four cats. We have also tried to keep secluding him in my sister's room for thirty days every time he did not go in the litter box. No matter what we do, he will stop for a few days, or maybe a week, then start all over again. Any suggestions? My dad threatens to get rid of poor little Landon if we can't figure out the issue soon!

Reducing Litter Tracking

I have a litter box in my upstairs bathroom for my cats. Well, over the Easter weekend, I had some family over. Now, they love cats and didn't mind the litter box because I keep it clean and it's in this little cubby in the bathroom so it's out of sight. But I was constantly running upstairs before anyone woke up and before showers to sweep up the litter that got tracked all over the floor!

My cats are really messy! Aster, with his three legs, scatters litter EVERYWHERE when he jumps out of the box (he's the worst). And Pharaoh gets out of the box and shakes off all his paws (which, I would consider normal, but it's driving me crazy!).

I bought one of those litter tracking mats, but the cats just jump over it! Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to keep the litter tracking down in my bathroom? Believe me, getting out of a nice clean shower and stepping on litter rocks isn't the most fun experience!

Thanks!

Training my SO on cleaning the litterbox

I have no problems with my cats. My cats are perfect little furry angels <3 !!! My fiance cleans the litterbox every day religiously - awesome. How do I tell him that he needs to also sweep up the litter off the floor afterwards?! I left the sweeping go for about a week (and with three cats, that a lot of litter on the floor outside the box), and he got so upset because our calico dcecided the litter on the floor made a much more convienent "deposit box" for her number 2. I said, "Well, you leave all that extra litter on the floor, woudn't you think that was part of your bathroom too?" Long story short, he didn't get it, and he still doesn't get it... It used to be his biggest issue was peeing on clothes I left on my bedroom floor, so I stopped doing that and the problem went away. Well, now he's peeing all over the living room. I know the usual answer is "Take him to the vet, something's wrong", but I'm pretty sure I know what the problem is. Any time he goes into the bathroom, where the litter box is, Kitty traps him in it and attacks him, so I think he's using the living room so he can't get trapped in the litter box. I suggested putting one in here, but mom refuses to have a litter box in her living room. Please help me find either another way to stop the peeing or a way to convince mom to move the litter box.

Covering his "stuff"

Raja has doing an odd thing when eliminating. He will cover up his urine, but not his feces. If he has pooped, he will simply look at it, get out of his litterbox, and then proceed to scratch or "cover" outside the box. If he urinates, he looks at it, then covers it up and gets out, without "covering" outside the box. I haven't figured out whey he's doing this and only recently (in the last month or so) has he been attempting to cover his feces. He will only cover it once in a blue moon. For example, I cleaned out his litterbox before putting him to bed, and today there is clumps of urine covered, one clump or feces covered and one clump of feces that is NOT covered. Anybody else have a cat that does this? Or any advice?

Cat pooped on floor - Need advice

Hi - I have two cats. A girl and boy. The girl is 3 years old, and in good health other than being fat. She's a big cat to begin with. Anyway, a couple of days ago, she pooped on the floor about 4 feet from her litter box. She did the same thing today, but in a different spot.

What could be causing the issue?

The cat litter is the same brand. The cat litter in the box was cleaned earlier today, so it wasn't dirty. There's no change in scent, and the formula doesn't say anything changed. Her food is the same, too...

Any help would be appreciated.

Sudden change in litterbox habits

Hi, I have a problem with my cat. She suddenly stopped urinating in her litterbox for some reason. When I cleaned the litterbox I noticed that there were just no urine clumps, only feces.

At first I thought she might just not be urinating for some reason, just painful for her or something, not getting enough fluids, but she drinks just as much water, both from her fountain, and from the faucets. I haven't changed the litter, how often I clean it, haven't moved it, either. She hasn't been meowing in the litterbox, or anything, either. I know she still uses it, because I hear her scratching in it, and her bells tingling in it, every now and then, like always, and of course, I find the feces when I clean it.

A couple of days ago, I checked with a black light, and apparently, she' s been urinating on the carpet and sofas.O_oI had to move her dishes, and fountain, and shut the room(actually my mother's idea/insistence not mine).

I wasn't too keen on that, as it's her favorite room in the house, and that's where her dishes and fountains are. She loves to sit on the windowsill, and check out the fishtanks in there. I checked the rest of the house, too. She's only been urinating in that one room, on the sofa and carpet by the window facing the side of the house, and on the carpet under the window facing the street(also her favorite window). I think she's doing it mostly at night, during the day she behaves just like she always does. None of it was on the walls, curtains, sides of the furniture or anything like that.

I think it's been kind of hard for her, as she's been standing by the door, wanting someone to open it. It's locked, so she can't open it herself, like she usually does. It just breaks my heart to see her by the door, waiting for someone to open it for her. Yet, when I locked the room off(to her, anyway), she just started urinating in her litterbox like always, again. I just don't want to punish her for something that's probably not even her fault.

She really is perfectly fine, except for that one problem. Hasn't been upset, nothing. I'm not sure what could have caused it. Sissy's always been a perfectly healthy cat. She's only needed her annual visit, vaccines, stuff like that.
