My male uses it right up against the edge, I would clean and clean and clean and it would still smell so I had to find a fix.
Go to Walmart or PetSmart. Buy the sifting litterbox liners. They work great! I do not have any more trouble with litterbox issues because I change a liner every day. No more smell and it has been tons easier. It only takes about 3 minutes to lift the liner and sift the clean litter into the next liner, then just throw it away. Just try it. These really do work! No joke and it never stinks. These have changed our lives. They fit to just about any litterboxes except automatic (tried that too, cat peed on the rake).

Walmart has enough for 10 days and PetSmart has enough for 30 days. The Walmart ones are thicker for under $3 and PetSmart is a little thinner for under about $12.

It is so easy, my husand even changes the box!

RE: Litter box Liners

I agree with Willow. I don't use Pam but I use a pancake spatula I got from the dollar store (for a dollar lol) and I flip the urine cakes up into the used litter bag (behind my back with my eyes closed).

I tried every gimmick and new fangled litter box they sold, until I finally realized that simple is best.

RE: Litter box Liners

I tried using the puppy pee pads on the bottom of the litter box. Instead of using two sided tape I just taped the edges to the outside. The first time I did this she managed to get a corner loose but the pad its self did not rip. So I tried taping the four corners and the four sides (sounds overkill I know, but she's a digger). It really works though. the litter box was clean under the liner. she ripped parts of it but never managed to rip a hole all the way through! Definitely something I am going to keep on doing.

Oh and by the way, I had been concerned about this method possibly being really stinky because the pee pad would absorb the urine, but if anything it had less of a smell! What a great idea that was! Urine collects in the folds and STINKS! Besides the fact that the cats dig holes in them. I much prefer to wash the pans out---I do it in the bathtub. I do have a handheld shower, so that makes it easier, but I've cleaned my grandma's litterbox out in her tub without a handheld shower, so it can be done. I've tried the Pam idea, it does work, but I haven't done it for awhile. They actually sell a scented anti-stick spray in the pet section at Wal-Mart, but Pam is cheaper. I just dump the litter into the garbage, then scrape the box with the litter scoop. That way there's no litter left in the pan to get in the bathtub drain.

RE: Litter box Liners

That's an interesting idea. I might try that next time I change her litter box. I have also thought of the idea of doubling up bags so that she only rips the top one up and then when I change it all the stuff that went through the holes in the top one just went into the bottom one. Then I Just take the bottom one out and put a new one on bottom and put the old one on top... if that made any sense at all. My only concern is that she might just rip them both then that would just be a waste. Oh well... I'll make sure to post as I experiment with these different ideas.

RE: Litter box Liners

I have a brilliant idea that may help with those who like the idea of liners.
Ok, so it's not really my original idea, but it works and it's simple.

Wash your litter box really well (I use plain white vinegar, a dedicated scrub sponge and rinse well). Then dry the box really well. Before adding the litter, spray some PAM or other nonstick, unflavored cooking spray on the inside of the box and wipe it all over the inside of the box so that there's just a very thin film. Add your litter.

Oila! the clumps don't stick to the sides, so the box doesn't get stinky and dirty so fast, as there's no expensive liners to deal with.

I've been doing this for several months and I will do it from now on, it really makes a difference.

Let me know if you try it!

RE: Litter box Liners

Let me know how it works!

RE: Litter box Liners

Thanks for that great idea! My grandmother and I actually currently use the puppy pee pads for under the litter boxes because her himalayan, Sassy doesn't alway hit her target. Maybe I'll try that too. I might try those other liners too. I didn't know all this stuff was out there for litter boxes lol. This is actually my first inside only cat, therefor my first litter box, and frankly, I'll try anything to make it easier to clean the litter box out.

RE: Litter box Liners

The fresh N' clean liners are essentially doggie housebreaking pads with double sided tape on them. I was going to try and "make" my own by trying the dog pee pads, and putting my own double sided tape on them and see how they held up. I'll let you know how they do.

Cat' rule liners are also fairly cheap and "reusable" they're like the cellophane shopping bags. Either cats don't like the feel and don't claw, or they really are that strong to stand up to 2-3 months of my three trying to dig to China. It says on the package you can rinse them and resue them up to 10 times. Maybe ten times if you wash you litterboxes once a week. I get about 2 months out of them before the "kids" start to claw through.

RE: Litter box Liners

I actually have been using tidy cats. So now that I know that they aren't good I might try another. I don't plan on spending a lot of money on gimmicks, if it comes down to it I can just hose out the litter box outside this summer. In the winter however, it's a little more difficult, so I really want to find something that isn't going to shred to pieces. I also have seen the kinda cardboard type liners but I'm not sure if I really want to spend that much money because it seems like the urine would just soak through. Any thoughts on that?

RE: Litter box Liners

I gave up on litter box liners years ago -- waste of money. I have 2 litterboxes going at all times, one is very deep and oddly enough all 4 cats only go #2 in the deep deep box so it is very easy to scoop out.

I have a shallow box that they only pee in. I also have a spare shallow box. I bought a $1 pancake spatula at the dollar store. I use scoopable litter.

Every morning I use the pancake spatula to scrape and lift the kitty litter "pancakes" out of the shallow box and I use the scooper/sifter in the deep box.

Because the deep box does not have urine in it, it stays cleaner longer. the shallow box I switch out with my spare shallow box 1x month and put it in the laundry tub with dawn dish detergent and a cap-full of bleach and let it soak overnight - rinse. This then becomes the spare to switch out next mo. with.

I think I have a good system going. I have tried all the gimmicks - liners, self-sifting boxes, etc. and simple is better seems to work the best for us.

**I did not train my cats to use different boxes for urine and #2 -- they just started doing it when I put a deep box and a shallow box out. I've have a lot of cats and this is what they seem to do.

works for me!

RE: Litter box Liners

I use litter box liners too, what brand are you currently using?

I liked the Fresh n'Clean liners but they changed something now they rip like mad. The Cat's Rule litter liners aren't bad, and depending on how often you do complete litter changes, don't rip. The tidy cats liners suck, they're just garbage bags, and rip almost instantly (but my cats try to dig to China). I see Arm & Hammer has sarted their own line of litter liners, I'll have to try them when i get paid again.

Litter box Liners

I am one of those people that really hates to wash out a litter box, So I use litter box liners to keep the litter box clean. Well that would be a great concept if my cat didn't rip huge hole in it. It kind of defeats the purpose you know?

Anyways, I have thought of using a deeper litter box, but I'm not sure that would work. I have looked at different litter liners and I'm not sure that any of them can withstand her claws. Any good idea on what else might work? Any advice would be good at this point.
