Honey is a year old and still acts like a kitten in a lot of ways. She still plays a lot and is very hyper. But she has also mellowed out a lot in the past couple of months. I'm hoping she never stops being so playful.

As for size, in my experience a cat wont get much taller or longer after about a year, but will fill out and get bulkier. Honey is still very lanky looking so I'm assuming that she'll bulk up some more. Males tend to bulk up more than females do. These are all things to keep in mind.

Most vets seem to feel that a cat is "physically" a cat when it is 12 months old.

But when does a "cat" stop being a "kitten" mentally? That has no standard answer. I have had cats who acted like kittens into their teens, and cats who mellowed out at 15-18 months old. I think that is a personality thing, much as it is with people.

Most cats are finished growing at about 12 months and are considered adults. But like a couple of people mentioned, some of the larger breeds, like Maine Coons and Ragdolls among others, may actually take 3-4 years to reach their full size.

Reno mentioned that they're in their "late teens" until they're about 18 months old, and that corresponds to something I'd read, that a kitten enters adolescence at about 6 months and adolescence continues to about 18 months. I saw that very clearly with Ginger - she was right at 6 months when we got her and is now 2 years old, and sure enough, at about 18 months, she seemed to settle down a bit and return to being the sweet, very affectionate kitty who claimed us at PetSmart. Harley and Kearstie were 10 and 14 weeks old when we got them and are now both 15 months old, and sure enough, at about 6 months they became brat-cats. I'm hoping they go through the same transformation that Ginger did at 18 months!

For show purposes (US) an adult is 8 months old, overseas its 9 months old. But normally when the cat is a year its considered to be a cat - not a kitten.

However, some larger breeds take 3-4 years to mature fully in size

A one year old cat is like a 15 year old human (so my vet says!)

"Officially," they are kittens for the first year.

That said, they are by no means finished at that point. They will continue to fill out their bodies, and mature emotionally. It seems to me that they are in their "late teens" until they are about 18 months old.

Hello: Generally a cat is considered an adult at about one year of age. Some breeds, however, are not full grown until they are two or three.

Can someone help me with Question that's been buging me? I have a 11 month old cat and i was wondering how many months does a cat have to be to be considered an adult/ one years old?
