Actually, the economists are being surprised by their findings, people who are true pet lovers will cut back every other area before trimming their budget where it concerns their pets.

People in tough economic times need the comfort that a pet provides.

My cats own my house they just permit me to live there.

Only cat lovers know the luxury of fur-coated, musical hot water bottles that never go cold."

I agree with you. Usually you can find kittens also for adoption. I prefer adult cats, but we got only kittens lately. We have 6 kittens/cats, 2 were adopted from the internet (1 from a family who helped a pregnant, abandoned cat, and the other one was “an accident”), 3 from the local shelter (they were overloaded so we got them in foster care -to not be put to sleep, but we ended  up in adopting them because they were amazing) , and 1 was found by my husband (the cat was hit by a car and was left there, so he took him to the vet and after he was getting well, we brought him home because we couldn’t find his family). The sad truth is that at the normal shelters, they will take in only a limited number of cats, so if no adoptions are made, there is no room for the new cats. So they put to sleep, in our town, around 100 cats/kittens per month. I did not know that (because they never say something like that on the site), but now I am worried about this “civilized” solution and about this huge number of cats that nobody wants them. Spaying and neutering them might help in the future, but adopting them might be a good solution for the present. My advice is to ask local authorities about the maximum number of cats allowed per family, for us is 6!!! We love them all, and they all are getting along just fine (we have 2 puppies, too), so we are very happy and pleased to have them.fficeffice" />

All of my 19 cats are rescues; feral and/or abandoned. Of my 2 dogs, one showed up at my place as a very young adult (that was 11 years ago) and our newest came from our local HS. Even 3 of my 6 horses were rescues!!

One of the fantastic things about CC is that it is full of people who understand the realities of animal welfare and are willing to step up!!
