| Do you read cat food labels and pay attention to the list of ingredients? Absolutely Do you know the purpose and benefit of each ingredient on the label? More or less, I try to feed feoods that don't require a PHD in biochemistry to pronounce and comprehend what it is and what it does. Did you put more thought into your cat’s diet when she was a kitten? She didn't adopt me when she was a kitten; but no not really. She was turned out by her former family who lived across the street, and she wasn't adapting to that life well at all, so our concern was to put weight on her. Have you had to adjust your indoor adult cat’s diet to maintain optimum weight? Once Pea had gotten to a healthy weight, no. Do you know about and have you used special formulated diets to treat specific feline conditions? How helpful were these diets? never had to use them and hope I never do. I've tried Indoor formula but never noticed a difference. How about your senior cat? Have you found a diet that seems supportive of your cat’s less-active lifestyle or age-related conditions? None of my cats are Sr's yet, and I think Sr. diets are a waste of money anyway. They're higher in carbs and lower in protein which is totally backwards for Senior feline nutrition. Tell us how you approached your feeding decisions. "Pay now or pay later" Either pay for the premium foods now, or pay a much higher fee at the vet's office later. Pretty much all feline health crises can be staved off by a high quality diet. So $30 a bag for a great quality kibble is still cheaper than an office visit to the vet. CRF, obesity, diabetes to a point, can be prevented if they're eating good quality foods from the get go.
My cats own my house they just permit me to live there. Only cat lovers know the luxury of fur-coated, musical hot water bottles that never go cold." - Susanne Millen

I just switched all my cats to Blue Cat Food. You can compare most of your current brands with theirs. I like the fact that their food is cold processed which means most of the nutrients stay instead of burned off during processing. Most foods, even human processed foods, need to be brought up to temperature of 350 degrees or higher to "kill" any bacteria.
Blue has very few fillers like corn and meat is the number one ingredient.

I feed my cats EVO 95% chicken & turkey canned food. So they don't get bored, I'll give them a week or so of Friskies Poultry Platter, which from the ingredients, seems to be the healthiest of the inexpensive "junk food" canned food. It has rice as the filler. For treats they get Wellness CORE dry food. Now and then I give them raw turkey gizzards or chicken livers.
They like the raw food and the Friskies best of all, but they haven't turned down any cat food that's ever been put in front of them. Pig cats, ya know. That's why I can't leave dry food out for them.
So far they seem to be thriving on their diet. Their coats are very soft and shiny, and puking seems to happen only when dinner is gobbled up too quickly. The EVO and the Wellness CORE are sorta expensive, but I'd rather have two healthy cats than have cable TV.

| I like to be sure the prime ingredient in my kitties' diet is meat, and I agree that a premium diet is a good preventive for future health problems. Mine were getting Royal Canin dry food, but due to unemployment I've had to move them to ProPlan - I like feeding them good food, but I like to eat too! They also get a little bit of Fancy Feast twice a day. Two of mine came to us as young kittens, one was a bit older. For a few weeks, all three were eating Royal Canin Baby, then they graduated to Royal Canin Kitten and finally when the two younger ones were a year old, they moved to Royal Canin Beauty. So far they still have very healthy, shiny coats and lots of energy, no digestive problems, and haven't seemed to suffer any ill effects from the change in diet.

Hello, I have a almost 5 year old cat who was getting a bit close to overweight. I usually put out 1/23 scant cup of dry food and she eats it throughout the day and I pick up any leftovers around 7:00 PM( funny how she know just when that time is coming around). I also gave her wet food but only about 1/6th of a can per day so I bought these lid covers and kept the wet food in the refrig. Not such a great idea as after 4 or 5 days even though covered the metal in the can must become a problem and she was geting sick right after eating the food. Now I bought the rubbermaid containers and transfer her wet food into that and all of a sudden she is fine and no more upstets. I never would have thought to do that. Thanks for the info. | After reading from several posts on this website as well as other websites, I'm rather concerned about the food I'm feeding my new cat. The canned food that was provided to me from her foster mom was Solid Gold, however, I bought some Special Kitty in the can this weekend. For some odd reason, she didn't take to the Solid Gold so much, but she loves the Special Kitty. According to the label, it has "Wheat middlings" listed as the third ingredient. Should this be something I should be concerned about? I'm thinking about changing her diet to an all can diet, after reading about all the health issues regarding dry food, I think this is the way to go. Right now she gets about a couple of tablespoons of the dry food for her daily meal. This lasts her all day and night before it's completely eaten The solid cat food brand I give her is Eaglepack Holistic Select Chicken dry cat food and one tablespoon of canned Special Kitty cat food. She is 3 yrs old. Should I be concerned about either of these foods causing problems? I want to her to be healthy for many years to come.

Special Kitty isn't good for your cats, it is full of fillers (lots of corn) and byproducts (beaks, feather, and hooves). If you look at any rating for this food and read reviews on it you would stop feeding your cat. Also this pet food has been tested positive for the chemical used to euthanize pets. If possible try and change your brand.

| Thanks for the info, I have read the reviews and have decided to make my own cat food for her. She deserves the best. I've been checking out several websites for cat food recipes and from the looks of things, sounds rather easy, as well as cost efficient. Thanks so much for clueing me in. At least this way, I know exactly what is going into her system.

My kitties weren't getting high quality food for awhile either just because I wasn't educated on the subject but once I learned my cats benefited. I just wanted your new baby to have the best!

| I know exactly what you mean, right now I'm uneducated. I'm taking her to the vet next week to have her checked out and started with her shots. While I'm there I'm going to ask him for his recomendations on the type of food that is best for her. I treat her better than myself, but it's still worth it. That's the least I can do for my Gracie diva cat.
