My 5-6 months old kitten is in heat.  There is no male around and she is strictly an indoor cat.  Is there anything I can do to help her?  She sound like she is in so much pain.  I have monthly cramps so if it is anything like that I want to help her.

Please help!!!  I feel so helpless.

The best thing you can do for her is to make an appointment with your vet to have her spayed.  Some vets will spay them while they're in the calling phase of heat but they charge more, or you can wait a few days until she's out of the calling phase.

No, she's not howling because she's got cramps.  She's trying to call a male kitty - to put it bluntly, she's horny!  You'll need to be extra-careful to make sure she doesn't get outside.

The best thing to do to help her is get her in to be spayed. A kitten/cat who goes in and out of heat (and they will every 3 weeks or so) is more prone to cancers and pyrometria (uterine infection).

Thank you Cats Dolls and Ocimom.  My husband had explained to me that she is not in pain but just horny (to put it crudely as Cats Dolls said).  But she just sound so pained.  And if this is to be repeated every three weeks, I don't think I will survive.  I don't mind the noise, I just can't disassociate the sound with pain.

I want to get her spayed but my husband wanted her to get through her first heat before we spay her.  He grew up with lots of cats so I am letting him take the lead on this for now.  But the info about the cancer and pyrometria is something we will be discussing.

Understand, he love cats (more than dogs, which he grew up with too) and our other cat, Tasha, he had adopted from the Humane Society and when she was spay, the person did a bad job on her and he was and is still upset about it.  He think that is caused her to developed digestive problem.  But he coddled her and eventually I also came into the scene and coddle her and she is a healthy 15 years old.  Therefore, he is reluctant to put Spirit into the situation.  Both Tasha and Spirit are indoor only cats.  We have been careful for 14 years with Tasha, so it is not hard to be careful with Spirit.  But these last couple of days, I had to be careful to keep windows closed so that the Toms (there are a couple roaming around) does not hear her.  And with the heatwave, yesterday was a torture for me and the cats.

Understand also that he is not against getting her spayed.  It is still in the discussion stage.  In the meantime, we are enjoying how loving she have been.  She is a stray that we found at church and felt that God wanted us to give her a home.  Because she was a stray, she get wild at time.  We have scars for proof.  But she have been so loving this past week and we just pray that her "situation" will help calm her personality permanently.

Again thank you Cats Dolls and Ocimom.  I'll keep you updated as to what our final decision is in regard to getting Spirit spay.

Something for you to consider as you make your decision - nowadays, many vets offer laser surgery for cat spays, which was not readily available when Tasha was spayed (I know because I had two females who were spayed 11 years ago).   Laser surgery is supposed to cause less bleeding, less swelling, and therefore less pain.  Not being a vet, I can't verify that but I can tell you that my current two females were spayed last year using laser surgery, and they recovered so quickly they never even seemed to realize that anything had happened to them.

Even if you don't go for laser spay, the technology has changed in the last 15 years, and spays are now much safer and less traumatic. Find a modern vet that has kept up with the new technology (not an older male farm vet!), and there should be no problem. The incision should be less than an inch long, and the cat will recover quickly. My kitty was spayed on Tuesday (by an older male farm vet ), and now you wouldn't know anything happened. She was a little clingy yesterday, but today she's completely back to normal. Even though my vet doesn't really keep up with the new technology. Complications are rare with routine cat spays. The chances of complications related to leaving her intact are much higher.

There are no benefits to allowing a cat to have a heat before being spayed. Emerging research suggests that females dogs should be allowed one heat before spaying for optimal health, but studies indicate no such benefits for cats, in fact, early spay/neuter (before 6 months) seems to be very beneficial for cats.

I believe that they are in some pain when in heat. When my kitty was in heat (we lived overseas and there was a waiting list for spays), we put heat pads on her abdomen, and it stopped the howling for a while. So I do think that it's akin to cramps. And, she NEVER went out of heat until she was spayed. Or at least she never stopped howling, and it was about 3 months (she went into heat at 4 months, spayed at 7 months). We almost went crazy.

Thank you, Cats_Dolls and Willow.  Sorry I took so long to reply.  Have been busy.  Spirit was in heat for about 3 days and she is doing fine now.  We still have not made any decision about getting her spay.  But thank you for the information about the new technique.  I will be doing research and passing it on to my husband.  (He will need to be given all the details.)

Willow, as for the heatpad on the abdomen, I think I agree with you.  Because on the 2 day, when Spirit let me I will rub her tummy and she seems to quiet down.

Thank you again.  Hopefully I'll have an update soon.

lol Chloe the hoe came into her first season on Monday. poor baby does not know what is wrong with her. She will be getting spayed I just have to get so I can afford to have it done. One more car payment.....

She's much quieter today. So does it only last a few days? I was afraid I'd be listening to that howling for a month straight. As it was she's not to horrible but I don't want every tom cat in the neighborhood on my front porch. She is the result of a stray mother and I don't want to continue that family line.

Yes, it usually only lasts a few days, but they'll keep cycling in and out until either they're spayed or pregnant.  Don't be too surprised if she starts calling again soon.

Thanks. I won't. I knew that cats are pretty much perpetually either in heat of pregnant. I have no intentions letting her go long without being spayed. If I had the money she'd have been done already.
