I can certainly understand that!  One of mine didn't get microchipped when she was spayed because we couldn't afford it, and she still hasn't been chipped - same reason!

Spirit's Mama (10/2/2008)
Thank you Cats Dolls and Ocimom.  My husband had explained to me that she is not in pain but just horny (to put it crudely as Cats Dolls said).  But she just sound so pained.  And if this is to be repeated every three weeks, I don't think I will survive.  I don't mind the noise, I just can't disassociate the sound with pain.

I want to get her spayed but my husband wanted her to get through her first heat before we spay her.  He grew up with lots of cats so I am letting him take the lead on this for now.  But the info about the cancer and pyrometria is something we will be discussing.

Understand, he love cats (more than dogs, which he grew up with too) and our other cat, Tasha, he had adopted from the Humane Society and when she was spay, the person did a bad job on her and he was and is still upset about it.  He think that is caused her to developed digestive problem.  But he coddled her and eventually I also came into the scene and coddle her and she is a healthy 15 years old.  Therefore, he is reluctant to put Spirit into the situation.  Both Tasha and Spirit are indoor only cats.  We have been careful for 14 years with Tasha, so it is not hard to be careful with Spirit.  But these last couple of days, I had to be careful to keep windows closed so that the Toms (there are a couple roaming around) does not hear her.  And with the heatwave, yesterday was a torture for me and the cats.

Understand also that he is not against getting her spayed.  It is still in the discussion stage.  In the meantime, we are enjoying how loving she have been.  She is a stray that we found at church and felt that God wanted us to give her a home.  Because she was a stray, she get wild at time.  We have scars for proof.  But she have been so loving this past week and we just pray that her "situation" will help calm her personality permanently.

Again thank you Cats Dolls and Ocimom.  I'll keep you updated as to what our final decision is in regard to getting Spirit spay.

I can understand your husband's concern about getting your cat spayed. We had a cat spayed about a year ago, and she had a huge, tight, barrel belly and cried everytime we picked her up. Another cat ran away about a week afterwards.

If you like raising kittens, that may be something to consider. We've raised lots of litters and they are such a joy. We always find homes for them all, and its so nice seeing them go to loving homes and bring joy! The risk of cancer ect. is not much, unless your cat has kittens in her old age.

Actually the risk of cancer is very high. In fact cancer causes 50% of deaths in older cats. Spaying or neutering a cat by 6 months of age reduces it's risk of cancer by 90%. And kittens are a great idea until I think of the thousands of kittens and cats that are euthanized in shelters every year. If you want to have a lot of cats around why not adopt from a shelter and give those poor babies a chance?

I tend to disagree that altering is healthier for a cat. Although intact cats have a higher rate of certain types of cancer, altered cats are at a higher risk for obesity, diabetes, heart problems and other stuff that related to weight gain caused by altering.

Not necessarily - not all cats do gain weight after they've been altered.  My three (two females and one male) did not.  Although I do agree with you, being overweight is as bad for a cat as it is for us people.

One of my kitties I recently "inherited" from my dad, Lucy, went into heat Wednesday.  Well, today she went to get spayed as we could not stand it any longer.  She was getting really loud!! I have had many cats, females and males, and never had a problem with the spay or neuter procedure.  I agree that it is better for them to be spayed/neutured.

To all my fellow cat mommies and daddies,

Thank you for you response to my problem with Spirit in heat.  I am sorry I have not kept everyone up to date on Spirit's condition.  So here it is...

Spirit was spayed back in February.  She had to have an emergency surgery because she got an infection called pyometra.  The vet was very surprised considering that she was only about 10 months old.  Anyway, the surgery was a success.  She had a checkup yesterday with a new vet (at a Cat Only Hospital) and currently she is a healthy 11lb. 14oz. cat.  We will know how healthy she is when her blood test result come back. (My husband think that I have given her too much treats and she is getting fat.)  And she did get a little plump after she was spayed...within a month in fact.  She was very lean before the surgery.  But that just mean there is more of her to love.  As you can tell, I love my kitty cat.  She is so loving...moody but loving.

Also, my husband was okay with the surgery.  Spirit's life is more important than how he feels about the surgery.  He only hesitate a moment when Cali, a kitty we rescued six months after Spirit, went into her heat.  God really stepped in that time.  Cali would spray the bed when she was in heat and don't know if you need to guess which side of the bed she did it in.  So Cali only had to go through the first round of heat and now she is doing well.

Now, we just rescued another female kitty.  This one was just a day away from death...I am not joking.  She was literally bones and fur.  The vet weighed her in at 1lb. 12oz and she is supposed to be 10-12 weeks old  but she look more like she is 6 weeks old at the most.  But that was two weeks ago.  Today she is doing well, definitely gained some weight.  Playing and romping up a storm.  Boy, can she move.  Just a little fur ball of perpetual motion.  Her name is Rodie.  She got her first deworm shot and she had been checked for Felv and FIV.  But in a little over a week she will be checked again at a Cat Only Hospital for any possible internal health issue.  I'll try to remember to keep you up to date.

Again, thank you for all your advices and concerns.

I'm glad to hear that Spirit recovered!  11 lbs. is a big cat but not necessarily overweight - but you are so right to watch her.

Cali sounds like a little spitfire!  Had her very own way of persuading hubby, hmm?  I like this gal already...

And now a new baby too.  I know she's in good hands.

What does Spirit think of her new companions?
