Hi All!

I am planning on going to the Crab and Mallet Cat Show in Baltimore this Sunday. I have a wiki website about pets (http://www.thepetwiki.com) and I'd like to get some pictures to put up to show people the way the different breeds look. I've never done anything like this before. What can I exect?

Thanks,

Rena

About the breeds?

I go to cat shows to shop, there's stuff there that I can't find anywhere else.  Once in a blue moon I'll actually watch a judging. If you're a fan of specific breed I can't see how you can pick one out of the creme de la creme of that breed in that locality.

They're judged by the a lot of the same criteria that dogs are judged by, standardization of breed specific attributes; build, coat, personality. But unlike dog shows, there's a class for spayed and neutered cat's The Premiere Class, which is just as prestigious as the Champion title is. There's ads for kittens and retiring show cats.

You'll probably want to go outside for a few minutes because the cat urine smell does get overwhelming.

My cats own my house they just permit me to live there.

Only cat lovers know the luxury of fur-coated, musical hot water bottles that never go cold."

Cat shows are lots of fun.  Like PeaLoki&Gabe says, I find things there that aren't available anywhere else, both for cats and for their humans.  Vendors sell anything from cat toys and trees to jewelry and novels featuring cats as the main characters!  Also, sometimes you can get samples of cat food and treats, or find out about new cat care products.

You may enjoy the judging - I don't really understand it and haven't paid lots of attention to it.  What I like to do is walk through and look at all the kitties, and talk to the breeders.

I don't know if they'll let you take photos, though.  I've never seen anyone taking photos at the shows, except that sometimes there will be a professional photographer with a room set up to make portraits of the cats (Chanan frequently does this).

Anyway, have lots of fun!

I agree with others- Cat Show is a lot of fun! Year ago at Cincinnati cat Show I got very nice fleece jacket- white with cat's head and paws prints! When I attended cat show in Kiev, wearing this jacket- I got all attention I could from cat-lovers and breeders! By the way in Kiev you are allowed to take pictures at cat shows; some breeders are asking not to use flash. Cat Show in Kiev is a big-big holiday for me as well as for breeders. First of all- it's seeing all your friends from all over Ukraine and Russia! We (Russians and Ukrainians) are notorious for partying and celebrating- so even cat show is a Party! Unlike in USA breeders are staying BEHIND the cages, and there is a lot of vine, beer, Champagne, vodka and snack there. Every achievement (sale of kitten, title, winning in division, etc.) is celebrated. If someone has a birthday that day- it's also a celebration. My cats are retired, but I attend every show in Kiev. As a veterinarian I know a lot of breeders, so I have many friends there and as a result I'm having a lot of fun and drinks too. I'm missing my Kiev lifestyle very much and cannot wait to go back to Ukraine forever!

I used to go to that show when living in Maryland. Expect to see a lot of beautiful and exotic cats of almost every breed and a lot of household pets too. You'll probably find one just like the one you have at home.

They have plenty of vendors selling cat toys, tree houses, equipment, clothes, jewelry, etc.

Go and have fun and next year sign your cat up to be shown

The show was fascinating. I had no idea that some breeds of cats could get so large! There were Ocicats, Norwegians and Maine Coons. They were larger than my mothers dog.

I grew up with Siamese and Himalayans. Those are cats that I'm use to. They had these cats, but there were also so many more exotic cats. I've seen what these magnificent animals looked like in books, but there is nothing like seeing them in person.

People were really nice. Before taking any pictures, I asked the owners, and everyone I asked seemed very happy to say yes. Unfortunately there were no American Wirehairs, so my quest for a Wirehair continues...

There were some cool toys for cats that I had never seen before. I got a couple of presents for my Omer.

It was a fun experience. I can't wait to go again.

I was hoping you'd come tell us about the show!  I'm glad you had a good time.  Isn't it cool to see all the different kinds of cats and talk to folks who know about them and love to talk about them?

Did you happen to see any Scottish Folds?  Round faces, big round eyes, ears that fold down tight to their heads?  I have one of those.  I also have a Ragdoll and a mixed-breed calico.

Anyway I hope you get to go to more shows - I enjoy going every year!

Glad you had a good time Rene.  Too bad you didn't have a catalog or I'd ask you to look up which Ocicat's were there.  I know several breeders that may have gone to the show.

I would love to be able to go to a cat show! I live way up in Northern Ontario and there are no shows around here. It would be great to see new cat products besides what Walmart sells. It sounds wonderful!
