| I had a cat who was very afraid of thunder. She'd sit huddled up and you could just tell she was miserable. If you tried to pick her up, she'd growl at you - sometimes that was how I verified that what I heard was thunder! We used to call her the Growlometer. She got so afraid that she'd growl sometimes at hard rain with no thunder, and she didn't want to be in the living room because you could hear the echoes down the chimney. The only thing I can tell you is to make sure she can always get to her "safe place." I had a huge closet and kept the cat carrier open in the floor of that closet, and I encouraged her to go to the cat carrier when she was frightened. Once she was in there, I'd leave her alone and she would settle down. If your kitty doesn't have a "safe place", see if you can help her establish a quiet, dark place she can always get to.

I have never had a cat that was scared or thunder storms but my aunt's dog was. He would shake like crazy and hid somewhere, either behind the rocking chair, in the bath tub, or by the fish tank. So I agree with giving your cat a safe place.

| My two girls do the same thing before a storm....they always know before we do what is coming. They are very clingy and want to be held during the storm.

| Generally, none of my cats seem to mind thunderstorms, but when the tornado sirens go off -- all of us (except for my husband who has to go outside to look) HEAD FOR THE BASEMENT! Once in the basement we all huddle together!

Jadzia used to get real nervous before a thunder storm but she hasn't for a few years now. Maybe because she 14 and seen many thunderstorms it just doesn't bother her anymore. Now she just wants to stay really close to me (I must be the Great Protector!). However, Kahlua, who's not quite 2 yet, absolutly goes mental! She runs all over the house meowing loud until the first thunder clap, then she's under the couch for the rest of the storm!

I meant to post this earlier, but a lot of things have been going on. Anyway, I remember a few years ago Cat Fancy had a story of a cat who was a storm predictor. She would go nuts and run down into the basement if a storm came near, even if it couldn't be seen yet. She wouldn't come up until the storm was gone. She was so reliable, her owners didn't need to check the weather report if they saw her heading for the basement. I think one time her owners went to the basement with her, and thus survived a tornado. Though the cat has been gone several years, they still miss having their own little storm predictor. I gather her replacement isn't sensitive to storms.
