I recently got a new bed but we still have my old matress between my bed and the wall. I also got my cat (Orion) a scratching post that hangs on the wall, but it's made with rope not carpet and it hangs where he can reach. But ever since I got my new bed, Orion wants to sharpen his claws on my old matress and not the scratching post. Also the tag on the scratching post says it has catnip.. but my cat won't use it much less sniff it. What should I do? Is there anyway I can get him to use the post and not my old matress?

maybe you could try playing with him around the scratching post.. get him used to the idea of using his claws on it and praise him when he does.

When you say it hangs off the wall... what exactly does that mean?

Try spraying the areas you don't want scratched with a scent the cat doesn't like (e.g. hot peppers).  It won't hurt the cat, but will keep them away.  Also try having catnip scent near the areas you want them to scratch -- followed by lots of positive reinforcement.

At my house I use a quart spray bottle of water and add in tabasco.  The smell of peppers makes them leave areas alone.

I hammered nails into the wall and hung the scratching post on the nails.. I have tried to play with him around it and also placed his paws on it, but that doesn't seem to work. My mom let him claw the rug we had in the living room but she doesn't have it in there anymore... so could it be a possibly that maybe he is used to a rug/carpet feeling more than the rope?

I have never heard of that. But the tag on the post said that it already had cat nip.
