| 7 weeks old? He's a bit young to be away from his mama-cat, and probably wasn't fully weaned yet - mama-cats usually begin weaning them at about 6 weeks and they take a few weeks to complete the process. You're right to try to get him to eat cat food instead of people food, cats need stuff that we humans don't, and they may not get some of their needs met by eating our food. You might want to talk to your vet about the eating-litter habit - if you haven't taken him to the vet yet, now's probably a good time to take him for a well-kitty checkup anyway. Considering how young he is, I'd suggest buying him some Kitten Milk Replacement, available at pet stores or probably at Target or WalMart. Make sure the food you're feeding him is intended for baby cats or kittens, rather than all-age foods. Please keep us posted - we love to hear about how our cats thrive, and we'd also love to see pictures! Best of luck to you & your new "baby."

fuzzy_ball (9/1/2009) hi i just got a new kitten 1 day agohes 7 weeks old. he will not eat kitten chow his old owners feed him people food like chips and hamburger and other people food i moistened the kitten chow he drinks water also try eatting try litter from his litter box. how do i get him to eat kitten chow and stop eatting his litter. i need help thank you
A 7 week old kitten who has not eaten in 24 hrs is in critical condition. You MUST get food and fluids into him immediately. Obviously he can't or won't eat kitten chow. At 7 weeks, he should be able to eat solid food, but if he's been getting real meat (hamburger), then he may not even associate kibble with being edible (can't blame him for that - felines shouldn't be fed kibble, anyway). To get food into him quickly, cut up some raw meat into relatively small pieces, warm them in a baggie in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes, and offer them to the kitten. Kittens will instinctively eat raw meat if they are old enough to do so. If you don't have any raw meat or just can't make yourself feed it to your kitten, then buy some premium canned kitten or cat food, mix it into a thick soup with warm water, and offer that to the kitten. Make sure it is warm but not hot.
If you are incorrect about the kitten's age, however, and he is still young enough to require nursing, then you need to buy a small animal nursing bottle, an eye dropper, and some KMR.
If you still can not convince the kitten to eat, take him to the vet immediately to be tube fed or you're going to lose him.
Laurie

| From mama's nipple to factory kibble is quite a change. He probably doesn't recognize it as food. I'd start him off with canned 'wet' food. You also might introduce him to some TINY shreds of grilled (unseasoned) chicken breast, and TINY amounts of raw chicken meat and raw hamburger. I also might try the traditional suacer of milk - kitten milk is fine, but at his age even ordinary milk will do for helping in the transition. What's important is that you find something he will eat, and get him accustomed to finding it in his dish, rather than on the dining table. Ultimately you want him to be eating true kitten foood; that's laoded with taurine and other things kittens need. Eating 'people food' is generally a bad habit. Another caution: do not give the kitten any bones. You would be amazed at just how strong their jaws are, and the proper chewing of bones is something only a mama cat can teach them. Of course, it helps if you lie a little ... when you place his food down, tell him it's fresh mouse

| OK, so you're over the crisis. You should still get him to a vet ASAP, anyway. Why? Well, the flea problem may have left complications ... and flea products for adult cats really aren't good for kittens. Secondly, if the little guy had fleas, he likly also had mosquitoes - which can give him heartworm. Now is the time to get him vaccinated for that, if that's a risk in your area.

| Very cute! But your kitten does need to see a vet, fast! I agree with renosteinke, the fleas could have left complications. Otherwise just keep him on kitten food and teach him table manners. Is he litterbox trained?
