Larry is about 9 year old, over weight, and has a slight thyroid problem. We moved into a new home 2 years ago and he started pooping outside of the litter box maybe once or twice a week. We have had him on a stool softener and checked out by a great veterinarian but he still does it. The litter box is regularly cleaned and he does it even when the box is spotless. Does anyone have any ideas? Please help.

| You might try Cat Attract litter. I work at a pet store and customers tell me it really works. Good luck! staffordmom

Thanks I'll try it. Anything to stop Larry from doing that.

Why does he have the stool softener? Is it possible that with the addition of the stool softener, he is unable to make it to the litter box in time? Just curious, but yes, cat attract may work! Also, if that doesn't seem to help in about 2-3 weeks (the litter that is), try Feliway. You can get it at most pet stores and at vet clinics. Perhaps there is something that is stressing your kitty out, but instead of urinating, he is defecating (it happens; it's rare, because they usually urinate outside the box, but it does happen!). The Feliway is like a Glade Plug-in. It emmits pheromones that only your kitty can smell. They are similar to those in the cheek glands and can help calm. Put it in the room where your kitty spends the most time.
Or, you can purchase a Feliway spray. It comes in a small bottle like a body spray bottle. Once a day, spray it on a cloth or on your hand (it won't have any effect on you) and pet him from the top of his head all the way down his back to the tip of his tail! This will dispense the pheromones to him wherever he goes!
Good luck and keep us posted!

That is the ticket, my wife says Larry is just stressed-out. I will try the hormone and tell you if it works. Thanks.
