My little Balinese kitten, Poppet, underwent her spay on Monday and the e-collar is driving her completely crazy. She isn't resting or sleeping as she should because of it and I am wondering if anyone has alternative suggestions to keep her away from her stitches. The vet had no further recommendations other than keeping the thing on.

You can see a picture of her on her brother, Neo's, blog at

You can see how totally miserable she is. We've tried a tube sock but she can wiggle it off.

Poor little Poppet, she does NOT look happy. How long does she have to wear the collar? I'm just wondering if it's necessary at all. When I had my Snickers spayed they gave me the collar but said she only had to wear it if she started chewing at her stitches. Maybe you can take it off her for a little while and watch her to see if she if she messes with the stitches or if she leaves them alone.

That sure is one unhappy kitty!  The tube-sock thing you mentioned in your blog could be a good idea for part of the time - does she fight it?  I don't know if you should use it 24 hours a day or not but at least some of the time that might help.  Or your kitty may not try to bother her stitches at all.

My vet sent Kearstie home without the collar but told me that if she tried to bite her stitches, I'd need to bring her back for one.  She lasted 5 minutes and we were on our way back.    She hated the collar too.  We shut her in the guest bath for the night because Harley likes to jump on her and back then he liked to try to bite her belly.

Well, that collar was tied tight because she was so tiny, the smallest collar was still a little bit big.  But the next morning when we checked on her, the collar was laying on the floor - still tied.  Kearstie seemed to understand her part of that bargain though, she left her stitches alone after that.

Funny ... my vet never uses those collars for spayed cats. A little 'bitter apple' on  the stitches seems to be enough to keep the cats from fussing with them.

Einstein did not get a E collar either when he got neutered.

Dogs think their human, Cats know they are .

When my two girls got spayed they didn't have e collars nor did they mess with their stitches.

I have been through 2 spays and 5 neuters ( 6 counting the dog) a NEVER had to have the e collar. I think you should only use it if she starts to chew her stitches.

Life without cats is boring!
