Was going to add photos of them first but wasn't prepared to use a "Hosting" site. Will just go on with the problem we are experiencing.  We rescued 2 cats 4 years ago from the local shelter. Dakota, our male is now 3 and was neutered just before we got him on a "second chance" program. Our female, "Zoey" is suppose to be a year older. The shelter gave (sold) her to us and insisted she was spayed. Well, she goes in and out of her "heat" cycles and the vet didn't see any scars indicating she is spayed. So, we live with her thing. I know, we should have her spayed but... almost $200.00 here we don't have laying around. Anyway, my understanding is that only the males spray and neutering is suppose to stop this behavior. Am I right or wrong here ? I am more "up" on dogs than cats. This is the first time I put an honest effot into owning cats. We were told before we went to the shelter to get two so one has the other to keep occupied. So we got 1 each. Back to our issue here. Twice in the last three months now, we found clean laundry, first time was our bag of clothes packed for camping (got to the camper and everything stinks),second time ws today, I went to grab a sweatshirt to wear outside and found two in the "clean clothes" basket saturated. NOW, this isn't a strong amonia like urine smell, it is more faint and annoying nasty smell. This is why I am thinking spraying but, like enough to saturate 2 sweatshirts ??? Any suggestions or solutions ? I can give more details if needed here. I don't want to get rid of them for this, I just want it to stop !! Maybe I don't keep the litter box as clean as they would like. Maybe she is doing it and not him, I don't know as I don't see it being done.

If we can't fix it, it ain't broke !!!

No, this doesn't sound like spraying.  Females sometimes do spray, but the most common sprayers are un-neutered males (or males who were neutered after they matured and had already developed the spraying habit).

When they spray, they back up to a vertical surface, like a wall or a piece of furniture.  This sounds more like inappropriate elimination, and it's often a sign of illness - so your first step should be to get both cats to a vet to be checked out.  Then if you still have a problem, it's behavioral.

I agree with Cats Dolls. And, if it does turn out to be behavioral, we can give you some other suggestions to help there too.
