Hi All,
Just recently, I found that my male cat has urinated on my bed. The 1st tome was about 2 weeks ago and I had my comforter off the bed at the time. (I actually noticed the urine as I was getting into bed at night :frown He has never done this before so my 1st thought was he was unhappy with his litter box. I have an auto litter box with the crystals, and after a week or so, the crystals get saturated with urine so you need to swap out the crystals or put in a whole new tray. So, I did this, washed all my bedding and put natures miracle on the mattress to help get out the urine.
So about a week later, he did it again, almost in the same place. So, I fgured myabe I didn't get all the urine smell out of the matress which is why he did it again ( I did smell the area on the matress prior to his 2nd pee and I could smell urine a bit). So, once again, I do my thing and clean the bed. I then tell myself to never leave the comforter off the bed, cuz he may still be smelling something. So, I caught him in the act on Saturday night, on the comforter. (He seems to only do this at night.) This time it was on the other side of the bed too. So, now I have a rule that I leave my door closed at all times, except when I'm sleeping. Now I'm worried he will pee in the bed while I'm in it. Unfortunately, I can't flip my matress as it's a pillow-top.
I want to nip this in the bud before it turns into a bad habit. I don't think he is sick, but you never know. He is very healthy, eats and plays with his brother, so I don't think it's that. (He just had his yearly exam in Aug.)
Does anyone have any thoughts or sugesstions? I open to anything!
Thanks,
Krissy

| When's the last time he saw his vet? If it's been before this behavior started, I'd start with a vet visit in case there's a medical issue. Have there been any changes in the household? New pets, people, anyone leave the house, new furniture, furniture being moved, strange cats hanging around outside? How many litter boxes do you have? Maybe he's telling you he wants one more?

| He had his yearly exam in August. I have 2 cats and 1 scoop free litter box which I clean/swap out the litter 1x week. I'm going to keep an eye on him and call my vet to see what her opinion is. It may be behavioral or it may be a health issue. Thanks! Krissy

Hello- Oh man- my worst nightmare! I have 5 male cats and will do ANYTHING to keep them happy- Assuming that he is a healthy kitty with no urinary problems (that is always the first place to start) have you thought about putting out a few more litter boxes with different kinds of litter in each? One covered, one not, try scoopable, clay, different textures of litter to see if that helps at all. Put them in different areas of the house as well. I tried a type of litter that looked like little styrofoam balls and the boys would have nothing to do with it….they would only use the litter box with the scoopable litter in it. One of my cats, Lenny, used to have an issue in the fall with urinary tract infections. He is the best cat- the first time it happened he waited for me to come downstairs, ran to the litter box kinda like he was saying ‘Watch me Mom!’ and then he tried to go. I had noticed that some of the clumping ‘balls’ were smaller than usual, so off we went to the Veterinarian. And yep, he had a UTI. Idiopathic (meaning no known cause)? Seasonal? We don’t know but he did it two years in a row in the fall. Good luck and keep us posted!

| Update... SO as I was getting ready for work this morning, I saw my little guy pawing on the couch. This is what he does after he's peed. So, now he's moved to the couch. Now I'm thinking maybe it's not behavioral, so I'm taking him into the vet tomorrow to have his checked out. He has now peed in 3 different places, 1st time was a while ago on my ottoman. He then moved to my bed where he peed 3 times, on 2 different sides of the bed. Now he's moved to the couch. We'll see what the vet says. They currently use an the scoop free auto litter box which uses crystals. I wonder if that mnay be part of the problem. Depending on the diagnosis tomorrow, I may elect to bring back my old litter box and litter. Any thoughts? Krissy

| The litterbox could definitely be part of the problem, my cats hated the crystals and the automatic litterbox could be scaring him. Switching back to your old litter and litterbox may be the solution, but I would still get him checked out by the vet just to rule out any medical conditions. Good luck, I hope he's okay!

I agree.

"The really great thing about cats is their endless variety. One can pick a cat to fit any kind of decor, color scheme, income, personality, mood. But under the fur, whatever color it may be, there still lies, essentially unchanged, one of the world's free souls." Eric Gurnery

| When did you switch to this litter and box? Was it around the time he first peed somewhere other than the litter box? If so, I would say that you have a connection. Another thing to consider if it turns out to not be a medical issue is what changes have been made in the house. It may be something that you consider minor, but has your cat acting out. Ebony did that sort of thing in protest when I left him with a friend for a week. There were no other animals in the house, and I took his things and stayed with him the first day. Before I left he was acting perfectly normal. My friend said that he never acted upset, other than pooping on the floor. He has never done that before or since. I personally think it was his was of protesting. Admittedly that was a big change for him, but you may want to consider if there is anything that has changed that may be upsetting your kitty.
