| Hi all, A lady has moved in across the road from me and brought with her the most beautiful set of cats. Would love one myself but unsure of the breed. Not got a pic but hopefully you catty folk will get my descriptions. Tortoiselike shell pattern on top with white belly and legs? Any ideas would be appreciated Alamaya with Onyx and Dax the 3 1/2 year old crazy DSH

| Need more info please - many breeds could have the tortoiseshell pattern. How big is the cat? Longhair or shorthair? Does it have tufts of fur coming up from its ears & paws? What color eyes does it have? Do you know anything at all about its temperament? Probably the quickest way to determine its breed is to ask the owner. It could be an American Shorthair, a Maine Coon, a Scottish Fold, a British Shorthair, or even a domestic shorthair or longhair.

I never relized Motzie was so pretty. She is beautiful!

"The really great thing about cats is their endless variety. One can pick a cat to fit any kind of decor, color scheme, income, personality, mood. But under the fur, whatever color it may be, there still lies, essentially unchanged, one of the world's free souls." Eric Gurnery

| OK, then the cat you're asking about is definitely not a Maine Coon - but it still could be just about anything else including a mixed-breed. We'd love to see pictures of these beauties, but I understand that they're not your cats so that may not be possible. I'd still suggest getting to know your neighbor a bit and asking her about her kitties - if they're purebred, she definitely should know what the breed is and might even give you the breeder's name. If they're mixed but not yet spayed/neutered, you may be able to offer a home for a kitten or two if one produces a litter. And very few cat-lovers will be insulted if you ask about their kitties!

| One of the difficulties of assigning 'breeds' to cats is that every cat is unique, special in their own way. Your cat sounds like a DSH (Domestic Short hair) in a classic calico pattern, just a little heavy on the white. Motzie has settled in quite well, and she has reached an 'accomodation' with my mother. Her past few days have been quite hectic, though ... our place had a little flood (from a stopped patio drain), and the house has been a mess of equipment, workmen, blowers, etc. She has coped with this caos quite well. (I must confess great amusement the first time she walked across a carpet - one that was 'floating' 6" above the floor to dry it out - sort of a kitty bounce house ) At one point my mother decided that Motzie was not allowed in the formal sitting room. To the amazement of my folks, Motzie carefully examined the closed doors, thought about it for a moment, then reached up and opened the correct half of the double doors! She had a purpose; one of the chairs is home to a ragdoll, and Motzie has adopted this doll as her pet, and likes to sleep cuddled next to it.
