HI WELL LET'S SEE HERE

I HAVE ADOPTED A NEW KITTY ALTHOUGH I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AROUND CATS AT DIFFERENT TIMES OF MY LIFE.  MY FIANCE HAS NEVER REALLY HAD ANY FOR HIS OWN.  I KNOW THAT SHE IS A CALICO AND SHE IS 1 YR OLD.  I ALWAYS THOUGHT CALICOS WERE A BREED OF THEIR OWN... NOW I AM CONFUSED....  IS THEIR A SPECIFIC BREED OF CALICOS OR DO THEY COME IN DIFFERENT BREEDS.

ALSO I WAS UNAWARE THAT THE MAJORITY OF CALICOS ARE FEMALE, AND I JUST READ THAT, THAT IN FACT IS TRUE. CAN YOU PLEASE ENLIGHTEN ME HERE

ARE CALICOS A BREED ???        AND ARE CALICOS THE MAJORITY OF THEM FEMALE ???

No, "calico" refers to a color pattern, not a breed.  Calico cats have black and red patches all over them and may have some white, especially on their faces, legs, and bellies.  They're similar to tortoiseshells except that the patches are more distinct.  You could have calicos that are mixed-breed, Persian, American Shorthair, Scottish Fold, American Curl, Maine Coon, and many other breeds.

Yes, most calicos (and most tortoiseshells) are female.  The pattern is sex-linked - meaning that the genes that create the pattern come from the female chromosone.  Male calicos are often sterile.

Welcome to CC!  May we ask for pictures of your calico cutie?
