I have a problem with cat odor. I have six cats who have access to seven litter boxes. The litter boxes are scooped at least three times a day. The cats have NOT gone outside of their boxes (I used a black light to check the entire house and nothing showed up.) but for some reason, the house still smells. Our house is new and we are the first people to occupy it. There was no smell when we moved in (we didn't have any cats the first year) so it can be attributed to prior residents. I put baking soda in their litter and we sprinkle it on the carpets and wait a day or two before vacuuming it up. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do?

Thank you!!!!

I use a big ( 4 feet X 2 1/2 feet x 2 1/2 feet high) storage tub sold at Walmart with a sturdy sturdy top. cut a entrance into the top big enough for your biggest cat to easily get into. the use clay litter (cheap any brand) to about two inches and then use clumping (I use Arm & Hammer double duty litter) to about three inches. I only have three cats and I ask religiously anyone that comes in if they smell anything. I have never smelled anything and in my little two bedroom house I think I would. I do not have carpet (due to my disability I live in public Housing in West Memphis, AR) and I do damp mop every day (almost ) with pine sol lemon. Now I do dust mop faithfully daily to get up all stray hairs dander and such off the floors. I use frebreeze on furniture, bedding, bathroom rugs etc. but i think the biggest assist is the litter tub, not box u might have to have two but I do not think more than that would be necessary

But doesn't putting the cheap clay litter on the bottom make it stick to the bottom of the tub? Or do you use some kind of plastic liner? This actually sounds like a great solution to the fact that most covered litter boxes are NOT inexpensive and if you want them big enough for some cats you will REALLY spend a lot.

If you think the odor is coming from somewhere other than the litter box, use an ultraviolet light (black light) to look for urine in the house. If it's the litter box try other litter brands. My favorites were Feline Pine and Purr and Simple, before I switched to the Breeze system. The Breeze system is fantastic!

Hello Shantiaz,

I found out about Breeze after 3 people told me about it at a Petsmart.  I was reluctant to switch because I had an expensive automatic scooperbox.  The box worked ok but we could not afford the refills.  Then the prices went up for each refill.  That is when I decided to try the Breeze.  It worked for all of the cats and our budget!

Hi Cricket,

Fabreeze is a deoderizer used for fabrics and then it has been used as a mild air freshener.  It smells nice.  My daughter likes to use it for her bedroom.  When I work with pet odor, I use baking soda products or Natures Miracle to help.  For cleaning I found that Resolve & Woolite pet carpet cleaner works well.

I tried the breeze system because of your postings and I love it! Odor is controlled, my house is cleaner, and none of us are breathing litter dust.
